I'm joining Phi Theta Kappa

Of course I don't care about the organization...just want my transcript to look good...heh. 75 dollars is pretty expensive. Exactly what goes on in this club?

Not a whole lot... We have the occasional conventions that you can go to, and you'll get some junk mail about all the wonderful PTK clothing you can buy and wear, but other then that not much happenes. It does look good on your transcripts though, plus you'll get a certificate that makes you feel smart, plus a nifty little pin. :)

Just wondering, but are there any other PTK members out there?

We never actually did anything other than inducting new members. I wonder if it is even worth it to put something like that on a resume...??

its def worth it just based on the scholarships available at many transfer schools. my chapter (im president) basically has community service events and meetings, but all a member needs to do to stay a member is have the gpa and send in the induction fee

sweet sounds like a great club heh

I'm in PTK too... my school's chapter does absolutely nothing, as far as I'm aware. But it looks nice on my transcript, and its something to put on applications, etc. ;)

i'm a member too...yeah!

So does PTK do anything other then make transcripts look nice?

I do like the little gold pin though! :-)

What are the requirements for this?

Is this one of those honor clubs?

When i was in HS i used to get a lot of crap in the mail saying i was chosen top HS student in the country.

Bunch of BS like that?

Is this for real?

First off yes this is a real group, it's not one of those offers to put you in a book... Likewise it does look good on a transcript. You need a 3.5 (plus $75 and 15 hours a year of community service.) in order to get in.

15 hours a year? really I go to IVC and that is no one of the requirements here...it's jus 75 bucks and 3.5

Oops sorry... The 15 hours a week is part of our honors program, not exactly sure why I put that in there.

I joined PTK last year...a waste really. But at the time I thought it was über.

I've been a member of Phi Theta Kappa for a while and our chapter actually does a lot! We've held several community service based functions, we've participated in Race for the Cure and the AIDS Walk, and we've been very active with the national PTK programs as well.

I guess it depends on where you attend school on whether your PTK chapter does a lot or not. If you feel like they don't do much, get a leadership role and change that.

Scary to say the least! and to think that most of you guys want to go to top schools. It frightens me! Phi Theta Kappa is an organization that exists to give "leader scholars" an opportunity to "serve" and develop "fellowship" with other students, schools, and communities. Thus, implementing the four hallmarks of the organization.

In all honesty, and without trying to offend anyone, it is kind of sad that you join an organization to "look good." It is up to YOU to make things happen...that's what leaders do.

it's kinda hard to feel school spirit at a community college

Fei your right, it is hard to feel spirit at a community college. I know many people who don't even consider a CC an actual college, and generally speaking nobody wants to brag that they are going to a CC. With that said, despite what anybody says I'm pleased with the work I've done at my CC, and while I'm not bursting with school pride, I won't go around bad mouthing the school like so many other students.

Fei,
I couldn't agree more.

Allena,
I agree with you as well, and I applaud your efforts. However, badmouthing a school is not necessarily wrong, if deserved.

It's the deserving that is not always clear as many students walk different paths even at the same CC.

Personally, I detest both of my CC's, but I am sure there are others that love them. I am sure there are some deep-seeded psychological reasons for both viewpoints, so neither is necessarily wrong.

My point is, it is just as fair for someone to bad-mouth their CC as it is for someone to proclaim their undying love for theirs. It's a matter of perspective and context.

yea I like my CC. it's a nice place, it's just that I feel I don't belong there...
