Hi! I’ve recently gotten a “provisional” admission to San Jose State. During my sophomore year, I got 3 D’s in my Math class, English, and History but all of them were only in 1 semester. My counselor suggested that I take online classes to make up for those missing requirements to go to a 4-year CSU. I put it on my application and sent it out, but I’m not sure if I even want to go to a 4-year CSU first. And those classes ontop of senior year being a real pain already is just adding more stress than I can handle. What should I do? Should I do the courses or finish my general ed at a community college for two years? Do you think I can get in without those requirements? My SAT was above average so I’m not sure, but I’m leaning towards no.
I’m just kind of stressing out over something I feel like I shouldn’t be. What do you guys think?
Thanks!
Based on your three grades of “D” in math, English, and history, you may want to consider attending a junior college or a community college or taking a gap year.
Attending a four year college is no joke-even for kids who are completely sure about enrolling. You know yourself and what you are capable of, hear yourself out. As I read it, it is already causing you stress, you have already struggled through the courses once as indicated by the low grades and you aren’t wholly committed to going to a four year right away. You have also come up with a suitable plan that allows you to focus on what is in front of you senior year, followed up with two years at a community college. I think you know what gives you the peace of mind you are looking for. Best wishes to you!
If you do not complete and pass the English course, you will have only 3 1/2 years of English. 4 years is a hard Cal state requirement so any acceptances in hand will be rescinded.
You know what you are capable of doing academically and if you are unsure about attending a 4 year college, then community college is a great option especially in California. CC’s offer ADT transfer guarantee to the Cal states and TAG transfer guarantee to the UC’s.
Best of luck and focus on what is important now.
If you don’t complete the A-G courses as you outlined on your ap - they rescind your admission. If you included the Ds on your ap and got in anyhow, you are probably OK without re-taking the courses. Most CSUs will accept a D or F for a semester if you get a passing grade the following semester (the call it validation).

A slightly different take on your next steps. Every high school Senior I’ve met has doubts/concerns about their next step. More school can seem daunting and most find the concept of ‘4 year college’ intimidating. I’d contact SJSU and see if they need you to re-take the classes. Do what you reasonably can to keep that door open. In May you can decide which path to take. A CC or Gap year will still be on the table but, so will SJSU… At this stage of your life - more options are better than fewer.
Good luck
