Importance of Mid-term Exam Grades

With mid-year reports due, I'm really nervous after seeing some of my mid-term exam grades.

Schedule: Course/1st MP/2nd MP/Mid-term
AP Biology/B/A/C??
AP Calculus BC B+/B+/A
AP English Lit B/B+/A
AP Comp Sci A/A/C
Yearbook A/A/A
(1st mp)Gym B+-->long story
(2nd mp)Health A+

The AP Biology and AP Comp Sci mid-term grades are what I'm worrying about. I don't know the actual grade for AP Bio, but judging by what we've been told about grade distribution, there were few As, even fewer Bs, a lot of Cs, some Ds, and some Fs. I'm hoping for a C cause I was unsure about it. A B would really be nice. Do I have something to worry about with both of those grades? I also took AP Physics A through Stanford EPGY, and I got an A in it. Could they overlook the mid-term exam grades.

By the way, I applied to Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell, Columbia, Swarthmore, Lehigh, and Johns Hopkins.

don’t schools usually send midyear GRADES not EXAM marks?

Most schools send mid-year grades. My school sends final grades at the end of the year, but for mid-year reports, they send the two quarter grades and mid-term exam grades.

Anybody want to chime in?

I don’t know the answer, but I didn’t do that well on my midterms either =.

Most official transcripts record only semester or final grades, incorporating the exam grades in…Given that you did well during the marking periods, you can assume that the colleges will do a rough average to determine your semester grades: Probably a high B for both courses you did not perform well in on the exam…If that is considerably higher or lower than your usual grades, it could make a difference…Otherwise, it won’t make or break you application…not knowing your other stats it’s hard to give you further feedback..

I guess each hs has a different policy. My school doesn’t include individual exam grades on midyear reports.

Yups, our hs also does not include exam grades…But the guidance office is trying to change this for next year…Can’t be a good thing; for some reason, midterm exams are brutal here for honors and AP’s…

I usually get As and occasional B+s, and those are mainly in some AP classes where I’m just bored out of my mind. For example, AP Biology makes me so angry. I just hate sitting there for two periods everyday listening to the teacher gawk about material that doesn’t interest me at all. Give me physics, chemistry, calculus, history, and political science any day. Never give me biology. I took it just to explore, and it was a worthwhile experience. I found out I hated it, and I’m just not motivated to do well in biology or anything related to biology like psychology, which I got a B in last year for the same reason. I think that might be why my midterm grade might be low, but it is in line with what a lot of other people got.

As for stats, I’m in the top five percent of my class of 440 students. I’ve been told that my activities are amazing and unique. I’ve gotten some great teacher recommendations, and the teachers that read my essays said they were great. As for test scores, SAT IIs and APs are good, but my SAT isn’t so hot. Although, it’s not that low that it’ll cause an immediate rejection. So, that’s a small vita for you.
