Importance of Mid-Year report

How much weight do colleges put on the mid-year report? I have basically been a top 2% student with a GPA hovering around 4.0 since Freshman year. This year I have been doing good in all my classes except AP English which has a very tough workload. I'm not doing totally bad in English; I'm just not working to my fullest extent, but it is still an extremely challenging class. If my grade in English on the Mid-Year report is not reflective of my other grades, will this affect my application greatly? I mean its only one class out of my 7 other classes.

anyone?..

It never looks good to do so-so in a major subject. However, there are ways to control the damage. If you are that concerned, apply early. Schools with rolling admissions will probably grab you without bothering to wait for the mid-year report. For early decision or early action, the mid-year report may not even arrive soon enough to be looked at. For regular admission, your mid-year report will be reviewed. How much of a drag your English grade will be depends on how selective the college is. Even among selective schools, some demand well roundedness more than others.
