I got it too, but I had already gotten my likely letter…

Camico, I got the email as well, but I have not gotten an actual “likely letter.” I am in state too

camico, as an in-state applicant with those stats you are in, so don’t worry about the likely letter. :)

emily, I hope you are right (and thanks for saying that!) but I’m ranked 7/15, which is the one thing that worries me! The 6 above me are qualified for UNC as well, but it makes me feel terrible about admissions.

has anyone gotten a likely letter and then not gotten in?

^Yes. It’s not a guaranteed acceptance by any means.

did you actually hear about someone that that happened to? or are you just reiterating the fact that no one is in for sure yet?

Nooo!!! I didn’t get a letter. I’m OOS 2300/3.9. That’s a bad sign.

i don’t really buy the numbers thing considering i’m oos with a 2140 and i received a letter…

when i got it i thought that for some reason they were sending out accept/reject letters now instead of in Ian… and it was a skinny envelope obviously so i was really bummed out… but then i opened it and was pleasantly surprised. :)

I am sure there are plenty of applicants who don’t get likely letters but still get in…no worries. :)

1) The vast majority of accepted students never receive a likely letter.

2) They haven’t even finished sending out all the likely letters yet.

Relax.

@ Secret Asian Man

Thank you for injecting some common sense into the board. :]

Relax everyone, enjoy your holidays and focus on the other apps; worrying won’t get any of us anywhere. Nobody at my school even got a letter. They’re pretty rare.

COMPLETELY AGREE, Secret Asian Man, and Deadmau5.
Merry Christmas!!!

It’s so funny to me - Admissions sends out likely letters to try and put applicants AT EASE during the season. It’s a present! You are in, relax, Merry Christmas. Do you really think they would invite you to an event and then later not let you come because of a rejection? And just so there’s no ambiguity here - if you were invited to that event, you are accepted. Congratulations. I have never heard of someone getting a real likely letter (and this excludes that ‘happy holidays’ letter they send out to every applicant) and being rejected. That would be cruel.

If you didn’t get the likely letter - no worries! It means nothing.

They send a holiday letter to every applicant???

^Yes. If you are on the mailing list, you receive the holiday e-mail.

So, the “congratulations on your achievements” letter and the “Seasons greetings” letter are two different things? And they don’t have any real signficance in terms of hinting one way or another about admission?

Yes, they are different. The “congratulations” letter contains an invitation for the Tarheel Shadow program, and, for most recipients, is a “likely” letter.

Hey guys, so I just got an invite to the Tarheel Shadow Program, but I didnt get a likely letter, did this happen to any of you guys? Do you all think that this invite is a good sign>? and are any of you guys gonna actually go before knowING your notification come the 30th?

Didn’t your invitation come in a letter that said they were impressed by your achievements? Or, did the Tarheel Shadow invitation just show up on your portal. If it just showed up on your portal, then your likely letter is likely in the mail and will arrive in a day or two.
