@moneyp
I’m pretty sure you can do that now.
You can see whether the topics are read or not plus if you previously read the topic it will tell you “# new”.
And if you want to go to the latest unread post just click on the topic title and it will take you right where you left.

missing seeing the actual date (xx/xx/20XX) of old posts

@milkweed I don’t know about you but if you hover over the Time/day thing at the post of post it will tell you the exact date and time it was made: (February 1, 2014 6:03PM) for your post. Same apply to everyone else post. Hope that help.

@descuff, you can do that for threads you had read previously on your last visit. However, if you had not read the thread, you would not know if there were new posts.
As for topics, you don’t know if there are new posts on the different threads there unless you open the different subtopics under it. Case in point, for international students discussion, you have to open the subtopics Canada, China, UK, etc etc just to see if there are new posts in the threads inside. You can’t get that information straight from the subtopic heading UK, China, etc. It is such a waste of time.

Thanks Descuff!

Yeah, I finally got on!!!

There are **hundreds/b of messages that contain post number references. With the conversion/perversion, those references are now lost – the link takes you to the thread – but some of the threads contain hundreds of posts. The loss of collective wisdom is tragic.
And the loss of ‘thread-level’ updates is a hugely adverse impact to user efficiency. I don’t need or want 17 individual messages to know that a thread is updated (and, indeed, I have turned off notifications).
The loss of message time/date stamps is simply stupid.
Leave aside the horrible new UI – the loss of functionality with respect to being a useful repository of information is inexcusable.
Over & out.

Also, we get the time on a post for the current day, but once midnight comes…poof, the time of the post goes away. Why? If you leave the date AND the time, we could reference the posts that way!

Of course, I would strongly prefer post numbers.

Ridiculous that post numbers were deleted in the conversion, but ALL formerly deleted PMs came back. Just ridiculous.

The changes that have affected iphone users makes the site almost un-usable. Has there been any word on if/when updates are expected, including being able to see the page numbers of a thread?

Two, I haven’t seen the last time the admins responded at all. If anyone has commented on the mobile site unusability, I’ve missed it.

TwoTravelin – totally agree. No point in having the app at this point. And that was my main way to read/post on CC.

The admins really haven’t commented on the status of the disabled application. I liked it too.

I think the mods have left the building… they thought we would be okay after a couple of days of getting used to it, I bet. But I have been on a little bit every day for the past week, and more now that it is the weekend again. And I still really dislike the look and navigation, and have lots of bugs. Stuff like:

My “Back” arrow in IE does not work within the site. I thought it was working a couple of days ago, but not now.

When I am reading a thread and click on “sign in” at the bottom, the sign in kicks me back to the main page (not back to where I want to post). So I have to go find the thread again to post… very annoying.

As someone said above, the College and University page has lost so much functionality because you can’t tell what has been updated recently.

The white just hurts. And a lot of the fonts are very tiny, even with reading glasses on. Can’t even discern which of the ‘smilies’ is which, and the ones I have chosen are ugly. The old ones had some charm – these are just garish.

Like everyone else, post numbers, post times, and ability to delete PMs are needed.

If this update was done to make it easier on a mobile device, then maybe CC needs to go back to having 2 versions of the site – one for mobile and one for a regular screen.

By the way – has anyone figured out what “points” are?

Aren’t points just the sum of the total number of likes and helpful clicks that a user receives? I know my user profile says I have 4 likes, 2 “helpfuls”, and 6 points. I think the point system is the much improved version of the greenie that CC briefly implemented.

I’m with you that even after many days of using the new version of CC, I still find it much more difficult to use than the previous version. Hard to read, the mobile site is virtually unusable, and mass deleting drafts seems impossible.

Edit: Just tried to flag a post for spam. I simply wrote “spam” in the reasons for flagging box, and got an error message that my post was 2664 characters too long. Why hasn’t this reporting option been fixed even though it’s been flagged since CC first rolled out the design change?

I agree whenhen, my points are equal to my helps and likes.

Intparent…the MODERATORS of this forum are not the ones making the changes in this format. The ADMINISTRATORS are the ones who are doing this update on this site.

The moderators for this forum are volunteers who have NOT left the room! They are quite visible…moving and closing threads, and doing their other moderator jobs. Please…let’s NOT point the finger at the moderators!

intparent, I have posted this before, but the mods have NO control over site design/function. All of the mods have been passing along comments/suggestions to the admin/tech people. Your best bet is to use the “Contact” button and make requests directly.

The mods never leave the building. With some of us on the west and east coasts, there’s almost always somebody on here!

And for some reason, the moderators’ avatars now say, “Senior Member.” We mentioned that several days ago, and nothing has been done about it.

The mods don’t deserve any blame whatsoever. I sincerely wish the admins were around though to answer questions.

This might be the only time n the history of CC that talking about moderators is okay.

They are volunteers. Thanks to all of them for helping us out. They keep us talking about all kinds of useful and somethings absurd things.

The admins need to get it together and make the big changes to make the board better. It took months of lots of folks whining about Common Application (CA4) rollout, and eventually sone things did get better. For those that do not understand the reference, Common Application is a Hobson’s Company. As is Naviance. College Confidential is not just a discussion board, but a huge feeder of information to future consumers of it’s ther products, which are many. By participating in Hobson’s CC discussion board, we all feed the beast whether we click on those ads or not

Funny thing is, the uograde over at CA is still awful - slow, not as intuitive as it could be. I have to wonder what will happen fir next year’s app, or if cintracted colleges will be jumping ship to Universal College App, which is very user friendly, as Common App used to be (even when clunky in terms if design).

The way it goes though is, however many people leave here, more will show up. It is the nature of the students and parents and others to use it for as long as it is useful to them. Some move on. Others stay, well, forever.

As much as I have used this site for the last many years, this change is less functional for me. I get eyestrain after a short time here. I do not envision checking it multiple times a day or week for the next decade. Maybe it is a sign to just find another hobby.

Change is inevitable in a digital world. The changes that have made this past week have made a difference for my user experience. Does the new site have a few things that I really liked? No. Does it change my engagement with the site. Not really. Do I hope they fix the notifications yes…I miss those most of all. I use the breadcrumb alot more than I used to, but now I’m even used to that. No matter what not everyone is going to be happy, we were all “used” to the old site…and many of us kept the skin from a couple generations back. Do I think we will see even more subtle changes to the site? Yes. Am I a “half full” kind of person. Absolutely.
