So my cousin got into the summer program when he applied for admission into UT @ Austin Fall class of 2012. He was told that classes begin on June 16, but he has this national music competition for that entire week. Is there any leeway around him going to the first week of the summer school? We've left messages with admisions and so on. Has this situation happened to anyone before?

This is from BeALonghorn. Admissions is NOT who you need to call, he needs to call whichever college he is joining. I don't know if they will give him leeway for this or not. Worse comes to worse, he can go to orientation and make friends and talk to his professors so he isn't completely screwed by missing the first week of classes.

What should I do if the Summer Freshman Class (SFC) program begins before I'm scheduled to graduate from high school?
If your scheduled high school graduation conflicts with any part of SFC orientation (June 10-13, 2008) or the first week of classes (June 16-20, 2008), you should immediately contact the college to which you were admitted as part of the Summer Freshman Class and discuss possible options available to you. Contact the College of Liberal Arts at 512-471-4271 and the College of Natural Sciences at 512-471-4536.

anyone else?

Someone who graduated from my school last year had to attend the summer school but was also expecting to attend the National Speech & Debate tournament that June. However, because he would have missed so much school, his counselor told him it was best to miss the tournament. He was a very devoted Speech competitor, too, so it doesn't depend on your cousin's devotion to the competition, it depends on if your cousin is willing to miss a large portion of schoolwork.

thanks...anyone else?

You aren't going to get different answers. These are accurate. You should follow the posted advice, and not expect to be allowed to skip a week of summer school as it's roughly equivalent to skipping a month of regular school.

Well somehow he is going... that is what he decided.

thats a bad idea!
