Hi, so I have a major problem, in freshman year, my teacher entered a grade that was incorrect which is a D. I told her about it, said that it was definitely an error and went to the Dean of Studies to get it changed. However, the Dean told her that it was too late to change it now and that the system has been permanently closed.

What do I do now?!!?! When I'm applying to colleges they will see this grade, and I just don't know what to do. I mean, if it were a B it wouldn't be so bad but a D?!!? I'm just so lost as to what to do and I don't know how this can be fixed :( Please help!

If it matters the subject was History.

That’s bull, there’s a way for them to change it, they just don’t want to go through the hassle.

That happened to me in my Spanish class a few years ago. The teacher gave me a 90/100 for my final but online she put 90/1000. All I had to do was tell her of the dumb mistake she did and she later corrected it. That Dean is a dick.

If you really want to go through the hassle of getting them in trouble for it, do it. Its not right that you have a D when its not the correct grade. Colleges are going to wonder what went wrong. Therefore, you should either, 1. talk to someone with higher power or 2. when applying for colleges let them know what these ignorant people did.

When I’m applying to colleges is there any way to make mention of this?

Talk to the dean again. If it doesn’t work, hire a lawyer. Make it clear to the dean that you are going to do so. They will change it if it means bad publicity/money. If after all of that, the grade is still unchanged have your counselor explain it, or it might sound like you’re making excuses/lying.

That happened to me too. I was a freshman and my Health teacher put in a B instead of an A… how sad. Not nearly as drastic as a D, though. I wish I could change it.

I say fight it!

I would try doing that but the thing is our school is the number 1 school in the country. And has been ranked so for many years, and constantly send tons of students to the top US universities and LACs every year and the thing is, we spend 5 years in high school (actually 7 but since high school starts in grade 9 in USA, that’s when they start calculating GPA) and after grade 11 (Junior year in USA) you graduate. And then to go to grades 12 and 13 you have to apply to something they call Sixth Form as if you were applying to another school and if you are not in good standings, you’re not going to get in because it’s already competitive. So it’s not only about academics but discipline, deportment, etc. and they constantly remind us of this. And as I said before, It’s constantly ranked No. 1 in the country so it’s a place that you would want to go to.

So, if you threaten legal action against the school, I don’t think that would really work out to well for you in your favor, and my guess is that you could basically kiss your entrance into 6th form goodbye if you threaten legal action against the school. This is my speculation though and I’m not sure.

Also, if it makes a difference I received the grade in July 2010 and its not April 2011 so it’s about a year, I DID however tell the teacher about it early lat year when we returned to school from out 2 month break but I guess the system permanently closes by 2-3 months after grades have been entered or whatever.

I just feel so lost right now. And I really don’t want this to affect my chances to get into good colleges and what not. I mean, you already know how hard it is for international students as it is.

On a college application secondary school report, there’s space for your counselor to explain this. They could put “______ grade in ______ semester of _______ year should really be an A. There was an error and the system closed, making it impossible to change.”

Talk to the Dean again and make it clear that you won’t give up. Bring in parents. Talk to other high-ranking administration officials (principal, vice principal, etc.). Heck, if that doesn’t work, call up the superintendent of the school district.

what should your grade really have been? a C or an A?

me? no.
It’s just that my teachers also messed up my grades, well only one teacher. The school refuses to do anything.

Honestly, I’m not sure what the grade should’ve been. Maybe a B, I don’t know. The teacher never told me. However, I was probably hoping since it’s correct if the grade can’t be changed that it atleast can be removed from the transcript. That one term for the academic year (out of 3).

They have to change your grade. Have your parents call.

if you don’t know what your grade was supposed to be, how do you know it’s wrong?

Firstly, because when I know the quality work I put in, and the range of grades I have received and they were not of that standard. I don’t think I ever got a grade on a piece of work that low and thus my average cannot be that low.

Secondly, when I showed my teacher my report card, she herself said that that doesn’t seem like me at all and definitely seems like an error immediately after seeing the grade. She is the one who put in the grades for her subject after all, so she would know.
