You sound real bitter, it hurts your argument

CountryWide Fin. is a Fortune 500 company.

if you're given an inroads internship, are you allowed to reject it?
or do you have to accept it no matter what? (sort of like SEO?)

i i did their candidate prep session in NYC yesterday. You can reject an internship. But if that is the only offer you get and you decline, then you won't be considered a part of the program anymore.

thanks secretfire!

Inroads worked for me(Asian male)

Was a CCC(california community college) student with very little work experience and almost no extra curricular activies besides running my own companies. Ended up taking an offer with Metlife working for the group insurance end of the business. It was a paid salary internship and I was able to meet many senior management staff members. While also flying around the country during the summer, 3 trips total, nashville, new jersey, and chicago.

I'll be honest. I may not return to Inroads due to a lack of finance(ib, sa, type) internships. But without them, I doubt I would be getting the interviews that I am getting now, as a third year.

So I'm proud to be an inroads alumni and always willing to lend a helping hand to the organization.

When I was at inroads leadership workshops, I probably met only one or two community college students during the entire summer. That means a lot... in my eyes.

I highly recommend inroads if you're a rising sophmore or junior with no internship experience.

As far as the socal region, the majority of people I met were interning for the big 4. And there were a good handful of asians. The reason why there aren't as many asians is because the site doesn't list that it is open for asians. I e-mailed one of the counselors before submitting an application. And another reason is the mentality that people do not want to utilize a diversification approach to entering a company.

Take advantage of whatever opportunities are available......
If you have to bend over backwards to make the sale, make the sale....

I have a question when do companies contact you...I haven't heard anything since I applied in December? I am begin to lose hope for this program.

I am in the same boat as you dreaming-melancholy. I applied to the program, was accepted, attended training, and have yet to hear a response. In reality it all depends on who your client manager is because they review the internship opportunities and select students to interview with sponsors, contact yours and hope that he/she is more inclined to help you out than mine is.

firebird74t: it all depends on whether your client manager feels you fit into the company(you're applying for) based on your experiences. I had customer service/sales experience prior to INROADS, never got a call from a financial services firm. Had one interview for an insurance sales internship and got the job before I even stepped into the interview room. The manager was just like "its friday, I don't want to be here" Then we talked about poker for 30 minutes.

If Ibanking/hedgefund is what you want to do, request a transfer to the INROADS NY office. But you have to cover your own living expenses(ie typically dorm at NYU for $800/month.

I did one summer at INROADS and was pleased with it. I did an internship with the Big 4 and without it I wouldn't be getting the interviews I got this past fall.

I would recommend it. It won't get you IB or hedge fund work, the training sessions are boring, but for freshman and sophs, its a real EASY way to get a legit internship and resume padding for your junior year.

Seems like a lot of people who receive internships are business related. Any stories or experiences with engineering internships?

I got an invitation to go to an INROADS info session in my sophomore year at college..they extended the dates because it is late in the year. I couldn't go the first session but they are having another. Although my job is minimum wage, I told them I have to work to help pay my tuition so the training can't take that many hours away. My boss wont let me take every Saturday off for their mandatory meetings, but I'm gong to try to see if he can put me on every Sunday instead as a trade-off. I know some would say, the possible internship is better, but the 3-4,000 I will make working, is needed too.
I am curious about a lot of things, so I will go to the first meeting to find out where the jobs are, my chances etc. I don't care if it's not exactly in my field, any experience is good and maybe I'll find out I enjoy something totally different.

INROADS has internships for engineers. Several of the interns I know are doing engineering(aero, computer and electrical). INROADS does not quit on Asians as there were Asians at the mandatory training session, INROADers have to attend.

startraksfinest, did you find you had to adhere to all the training sessions...was it okay to miss one? I'm trying to balance doing it and working, unfortunately I can't just wait to see if I get an internship, I have to work in-between.

BRJ-CT, you technically can miss the training sessions, but you will not be eligible for awards and scholarships that INROADS and your sponsoring company may provide.

Okay, I'm going to an initial meeting next week and I'll ask whatever questions I still have. It's hard when you need to work and look for work...I am grateful to have a job (menial as it is) and need to pay at least 3,000 of my tuition this year. BUT, I would like the experience and training that would come with an Inroads internship if I can get one. It's the "if" that bothers me, I don't want to blow this job taking too much time off, just to have the training and no job. They can't guarantee you one, but the success rate is not bad or they still wouldn't be doing it.

Wait how are you going to the meetings if you dont have an internship? The workshops are for interns that have already been placed.

This is the initial prep session, but you have to attend the bi-weekly meetings and other activities they have planned, unless you have a good reason not too.
They added one session next Wednesday and I'm trying to get that day off or switch with someone. They were nice about trying to accommodate and hopefully will appreciate a good work ethic.

Can you be a Psychology major with a business minor and do INROADS? I'm asking because when I read bios of people at my bank/insurance company, I notice many Psych majors and not many of them go into that field. My daughter was told it was okay on an inital screen, but reading some of these posts, it seems like mainly business majors apply. She was thinking Human Resources or Industrial Psychology which is for business's in the future.

Yes, you can...I know someone who did that, was a Psych major with Spanish minor. They said it was okay, as long as their was some interest in business. Many Psych majors decide at graduation to go into something else.
