Internship Ideas for Average Student

I messed up a couple of semesters in school, and now I have a 3.1ish GPA. I want to intern in the finance industry to get a glimpse of it, and make sure this is definitely what I want to do. Does anyone have any idea of some places to apply for a summer internship? Everyone else here shoots for Goldman Sachs, etc. but I obviously don't have the resume to get an internship there, so any help on where I should be looking?

You might want to visit your school's career center. I'm sure they've placed students in similar situations as yourself into summer internships, so they should be aware of the relative standing needed to get a position at each company.

Where are you located? Corporate Finance is usually only in a few selected cities.

You can always try financial services and just work your way up. Try calling any major company and see if they have branches in your area. Most likely they will have financial advisors that might be willing to help you out.

Thank you for the help. I've been to my career center, but so far they just sent me to an internship career day. It was nice to talk to some of these people, but I'm pretty sure no one was impressed with my resume out of the people who were at this career fair. And I live in New Jersey, so i have my proximity to NYC as an advantage.

As a freshman, whatever opportunity you get will probably be unpaid. You'd be lucky if you get a paid internship. Remember that the goal here is to build your resume up for that awesome first job, not toe get the first awesome job.

Also, if you're not a freshman, you're screwed. Try calling alumni about internships with their firm or hit up your parents to see if they know anyone. My friend somehow got a reporting gig for the olympics in Beijing for the summer, all accommodations paid, and paid on top of that, through her parents and she's a freshman.

Well I'm a junior and I've been looking since January with no such luck. I've just been looking for any ideas really because I've tried a lot a lot a lot of places.

Try former professors, former teachers you knew in high school, anyone. Maybe a friend who perhaps had better luck.

Pokey - check JerseyIntern.com - New Jersey's largest Internship network - find internships and jobs locally or state wide!

You either need to have good connections or great grades at a good college to get an internship at somewhere meaningful such GS,UBSIB or a Hedge Fund. So be prepared to have some slightly less than choice options.
