Interracial Dating at Southern Schools

Quite a loaded question, durt. Ever heard of the distinction between overt and subtle? The overt racism--lynching, racial slurs--still exists, but as much today as subtle racism. Besides, you don't have to be cross-burning caliber racist to be opposed to interracial dating.

yea, ive spent most of my life in central indiana and i have only seen 1 or 2 cases of open racism. But it is a well known fact at my high school which girls have parents who dont like the interracial dating thing. There are actually on 5 or 6 families in a 2100 student school so it isnt that bad.

I don't understand why you people are criticizing me for asking such a simple question. I go to a school in Central Florida with over 3000 students. Now I'm thinking about going to a small college with barely any minorities, a majority white school. Yeah I live in a predominately white neighborhood, I go to a predominately white school but atleast I see alot of minorities everywhere. I wouldn't see alot of minorities at Sweet Briar or Hampden-Sydney. I don't think the world is after me because I'm black.

But anyways, thanks for the responses that were helpful.

yes racism exists in every state but it is more evident in certain regions. In the midwest/northeast/west you rarely see anyone who is openly racist. In the mid-south/deep south a lot of people are openly racist and dont even attempt to hide it

You are absolutely right and I see it in my own town all the time. (I live in Central Virginia and I cannot wait to leave this town.) I mean at my local grocery store, people were famous for dropping racial slurs and being very nasty, which is exactly why I quit. My high school has issues as well, but I won't go into that. I'm not here to discourage you Poison Ivy, but it's more evident in some places than others. I'm not only saying it's against blacks here and since our hispanic population has been getting bigger, people have had a lot to say about that...

Lots of SB girls come to Lynchburg to meet other students as it's much closer than Farmville and has some decent clubs and lots of male students between Lynchburg College and Liberty U. Liberty U has a decent sized minority enrollment.

Another supporter of the OP's question here. People need to stop pretending that there is no racism in some of the southern areas. I'm from maryland, and its really not a problem around here(near the Baltimore area) but i've been out towards western maryland too. It's not uncommon to see confederate flags outside of people's houses, which i can't imagine would be very comforting to an African American or myself(as a Jew)

I've also been through areas of VA and NC, and there are clear expressions of religious/racial close-mindedness. I can't comment specifically on the area you are mentioning, but you should visit and look into it.

kenshi: what the hell? How is asking a question about the dating scene at a school "pulling the race card"? People ask about the dating scene at their schools all the time. What if a Hispanic/Jewish/Asian (no offense to any of these minorities) person asked the question? I wonder what would be your response.

Sorry about the rant. I can't stand it when people act like that and make sweeping generalizations.

No Asian would ask that question. We have better things to do than bicker about race.

I have a D at a small private school in SW Virginia--several of her friends are interracial couples both black/white and asian/white and it is no big deal. In fact she had never even mentioned race of her friends, so I was not aware of ethnic make-up of her friends until I met them in person. My two sons attend(ed) private schools in NC and also had friends in interracial relationships. I really don't think it is even noticed by college students or other educated persons.

I don't think people in the south care, people just think they do. Actually the problem that I have found in my school is reverse discrimination where white people are discriminated against. In my high school the admin is stricter with white kids then with blacks and the black people are very rude to the white ones. I live right outside of atl and we have plenty of interracial couples at all of the schools I have friends at, even down in Savannah. I would not worry about it or make it a priority in college decision making.

If anything I'd worry about it more in the North. In my elementary school there was one black kid in my grade. In the south there is much more exposure to people of different races etc.

to the person that started this thread/asked the question:

I am also black.

I dated a white girl about a year ago. It's not the white people you've gotta worry about. I got taunted mostly by black people - my friends.
It's cool, just prepare to get stared at.

please realize most southern whites are in some way racist, they always will be. (as you can see from some of the comments on this board.)

to the racist b v. board of education comment:

I live in Maryland. In Prince George's County, where whites are in the minority.
About a year ago, a white guy in this area was shot 19 times. He was drunk, rambled through an all-black neighborhood, saying the kinds of stuff you're saying here. That type of ignorance may be acceptable in the south, but not here in the Washington, D.C. area.

oh, and YES: Brown v. Topeka Board of Education is in full effect in the mid-atlantic and the north.

As neverborn said, let ignorance foster...

I second the comment made earlier: I would avoid schools in the South altogether. They're far too racially charged.

Oh, funny Richkid..Why did you have to change "Most Southern whites are racist" to "..are in some way racist?"
And what comments, precisely?
Last, you would be a fool to assume I would be in a black neighborhood without ample protection.

Realize it or not, blacks these days are much more racist than whites.

richkid is an example, Chuck.

Actually, it ws chuck that made the original comment. I'm not racist in any way, just not gonna sit back and let racist whites run all over my C-I-V-I-L rights.

oh, and I changed the previous comments to include subtle racist acts.
Notice i said MOST, not all.

Yeah, we're running all over your civil rights. Mhm.

GTFO

Quote:
Actually here in the south we don't recognize Brown v Board of Education... segregation is in full swing... and we sure hate minorities... I'm glad some people from other places are in the know.

Haha that was well deserved for OP.

^^I believe that was your comment, chuck.

Its called sarcasm. GTFO.
