Interview Email - Generic or not?

Today I got an email from a Harvard alumna in my area asking me to schedule an interview. I am not applying ED or anything, and I was wondering if this email was likely sent to others in my area, and just in general what I should make of it... Do they only offer interviews to candidates they are interested in?

1) Harvard no longer has ED.

2) Not every applicant gets called for an interview, however, being scheduled for an interview does not mean that you have a greater chance of getting into Harvard than a student in another town who does not get an interview.

3) See: http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/apply/faq.html#16</a>
“Is there a personal interview?
When and where possible, we try to arrange for applicants to meet with alumni/ae in or near their school communities. No candidate is at a disadvantage if an interview cannot be arranged. In the U.S., Canada and the U.K., an alumnus/a will contact an applicant directly by phone, email, or letter if such an interview is possible. If you live outside these areas, please check our website for country-specific instructions.”

The 23 people whom I know were rejected from Harvard all received interviews. I think the admissions website makes it pretty clear that Harvard doesn’t really go out of its way to demonstrate interest in applicants, unless you have a coach genuflecting at the feet of an admissions committee member on your behalf to get you a likely letter.

Most likely. I received this email, as did many others in my area.
