Iowa sstp 2012

bbcarol: yes, I think it’s probably more difficult to find a professor who’s doing research in surgery… Or even if there is one, the research is probably quite advanced so the professor might prefer a grad or undergrad student instead of a high school student. (Actually, I was pretty surprised that they had Internal Medicine as a choice! I thought that would be pretty hard too, especially since U of I is ranked highly for Internal Med research.)
Btw I was actually also wondering what floatingdolphin asked you (though quite rudely). Are both daughter and parent sharing the same account? I was pretty confused sometimes…

I got placed into Computer Science (my 2nd choice) with Prof. Suely Oliveira. (https://www.cs.uiowa.edu/people/suely-oliveira</a>) Was hoping for my first choice (Engineering) but nevermind, CS is awesome too. :)

@archaic: Yes my D and I shared the same account… CC do “care” if there are rude kids on the board and they remove rude remarks promptly if reported. Wonder why floatingdolphin was so upset with everyone. Uncalled for…

@Ishbir: Thanks for sharing your lab placemenet info. First “non-med” lab placement, congrads ! It looks pretty good.

Any more lab placements ??

Thank you bbcarol. :)

Hey, joining the conversation a little late, but I got accepted into SSTP and placed in an evolutionary biology lab with Dr. Neiman. It has something to do with New Zealand Mud Snails and sex…

^that sounds interesting LOL
I have no lab placement yet… I put Internal medicine as my first too :/

@bbcarol: Oh okay, I see :)

Congrats ishbir and bling3d! (Mud snails and sex… xD)

Hmm I kind of wish I put something different as my first choice, like pharmacology or something. (I put that as my “Other” choice… not sure if that means it’s my 4th choice) Buuut it’s too late to change it anyways.

I think that it’ll be cool to see all the people who posted on this thread at SSTP. Anyways. congrats to everyone who made it in! Also, I hope you get your placement soon, Kairoux

I got my first choice in computer science with Dr. Padmini Srinivasan.

bling3d: just wanted to say that i love your wording hahaha

@shinexalive: Pediatrics sounds cool! Do you know what you’ll be doing specifically? Laboratory work or not?

Is everyone here going to SSTP or sure, or did you guys apply to other programs as well? Most of the other programs I applied to send out acceptances around April 20, so I’m not completely sure if I’m going to SSTP or not…

@Archaic: Yes I’m definitely attending SSTP this summer. I already paid, and I got my first choice for my lab assignment… so I’m good to go!

I’ve paid, so I will be attending SSTP. On a side note, I play tennis too, so maybe we can play doubles lol.

@archaic, thank you, and hope you will get your lab placement soon. The same wish to those who are waiting for lab matching…
@for everyone who contributed to this forum, thanks for sharing your stats, hobbies, and your thoughts that make the program more fun beyond the research.
@for those who are on waiting list or got rejected, please don’t give it up!
You all are wonderful, and I am impressed!

@archaic: Meh, not really. Genetics and their role in childhood conditions? Sounds like SOME lab work involved though.
And nope, have not paid yet - not out of hope that I’ll be accepted to SSP, but out of pure procrastination…

@bling3d: The more the merrier ^_^~

Reminder -
If you are accepted and plan to attend SSTP, you’ll need to register and to be admitted by UI by May 1st. Prior to your registration, you should

“Have your high school send a transcript to the Office of Admissions, 107 Calvin Hall, Iowa City, IA 52242-1396”.

@shinexalive: Have you searched up your mentor on the U of Iowa website? A lot of professors have more info about their research on their pages; or you could email him/her for more info and see if you’re really interested in it.
If you want to go to SSP, don’t give up hope yet! Admissions people are pretty hard to predict. You don’t have to pay for SSTP until May 1st.

@shinexalive: The lab work might be interesting for your placement. You might get to try some cool equipment and procedures like Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) or gel electrophoresis. I would try contacting your mentor to see exactly what you’ll do, but I think you should get to perform those procedures since they’re heavily linked to genetics research. Archaic was right, you still might get into SSP, so good luck!

@archaic & bling3d: thanks for the suggestions! Actually, contacting them sounds like a really good idea. I’m actually really excited, though we kind of bleh skipped over the technical portions of genetics in class. I just got rejected from SSP…so Iowa it is! ^^~

How long does it take to register for UI? Because I’m waiting on decisions from another program and don’t want to lose Iowa SSTP because I couldn’t get the money for the credits in.

Another thing, anyone who didn’t get lab placements the first round get them yet? :O
