Is a 4.0 a Guarentee to the elites?

Like my thread titled...well I guess a 3.9 or 4.0 and applying to transfer after SOPHMORE year not freshman year..

no it's not...nothing is

I've got a 4.0 and I know even then my chances are slim...

nothing is guaranteed

A 4.0 from where? It would be a pretty sure thing from HPSM.

I was told that a 4.0 from USC would guarantee you admission to Harvard.

Nikkei, look at what brand182 said: nothing is guaranteed.

You also don't know what the competition is at the time of transfer. Someone from Stanford or Berkeley with a 4.0 (and exceptional essays) would obviously stand a better chance than the USC transfer. Also, what was the 4.0 in? 100/200 level courses or 300+ level courses? Lots of variables and "what-ifs" to make such a blanket statement. Again, nothing is guaranteed.

nikkei, that is definetly not true. that's just not how harvard works.

nikkei -- i don't know where you heard that, but it's wrong. having a 4.0 is helpful but it in no way guarantees anything. for shag is correct.

(shaggie would know, she's in already.)

i'm getting really sick of this 'elites' ******** cluttering the forum. is there any way we can make a sticky about an 'elites' discussion, please? jesus..

What's wrong with the elites? Which colleges do you think people should be transferring to then?

there is nothing wrong with asking about the elites, but 9/10 times people who ask if "4.0 from Big Balls state university" will get me into Harvard, they aren't interested in a certain program that the school has, all they care about is the name on their degree. It's usually a prestige thing.

lmao big balls state U

I disagree that the name of the school you are transferring from carries any weight. Granted a 4.0 from a community college isn't as impressive as one from a four-year school, but I would imagine that a 4.0 from, say, USC , would have just as much of a chance at Harvard as a student from Brown would, provided that each student has a demonstrated need and desire to transfer.

Hahahahaha, Big Balls state university. Brilliant!

Hopefully people transfer for legitimate reasons...from a CC to an Ivy is legitimate. Wanting a specific program unavailable at your current U is legitimate. Just wanting to move 'up' to a school of greater name recognition- probably not.

How is transferring from a CC to an Ivy legit and 'moving up' is not? Most likely, with the exception of a financial barrier, if you are at a community college, you weren't too great in high school, and now you want to bypass someone from a mediocre school who has been working their butt off since ninth grade. Come on WindCloudUltra.

I think the point WindCloudUltra is making is that in the eyes of admissions officers, it is much easier to say why you want to transfer from a CC. If you are coming from a school that is just a little lower ranked (which doesn't matter anyways) than the school you intend to transfer to, you need to have some great reasons. Name recognition is not a great reason and you will most likely be rejected.

What about someone who is fine academically, but wants to transfer to another university for social and fit reasons? How are these people viewed?

those are good enough reasons, just make sure you explain them thoroughly...seriously, i think everyone wants to "move on up" to the best college for them, but you don't want to tell the admissions committee that that is your sole reason for transferring...there are far more deserving students.

A 3.5+ with amazing reasons and a unique, passionate personality will get into the "elite" schools as a transfer before a bland prestige whore with a 4.0 any day.

that sounded a bit too authoritative. that's not to say a lot of people with 4.0s and great reasons and personalities don't get in. i'm not harvard or wharton or whatever this thread is about, i don't really know. wow.... i'm schwasted... this has been a lonnnng night...
