I go to MDC in Miami. So my major is Political Science. I’ve had 3 F’s and 4 W’s. I have a few C’s. I meet the minimum GPA for Political Science which is 2.0, mine is above that though. I’ve taken 1 of my required for the course so far, which is INR2002. I still have to take the others. I figured I’d finish my AA of 60 credits or so at Miami Dade College (my college) by this Fall or Spring. So are my chances low or am I fine or? I also plan on retaking one of the F’s and replacing some of the W’s. So…?
I don’t know if I can even get into uf, but I’m trying other school to see their status on this stuff. Be honest.
UF is selective when it comes to transfer students. How selective varies by major. Having an AA degree from a Florida CC does not guarantee admittance to UF.
Some majors will consider W’s, others do not. In your case, not meeting the minimum GPA is a red flag. You really need to get your GPA higher, and if needed retake a class or two.
Of course, you can always apply to a less selective Florida university that has your major.
If you get your AA from MDC, you’re guaranteed admission to any public university in Florida (FSU, UF, etc.). The only exception to the rule is if your major is limited access. You may be denied admission if your major is limited access.
Someone is going to say the rule is you’re guaranteed admission to “a” university not “any” university. This is technically true, but I’m certain in practice, you are guaranteed admission to any university. Schools never get more AA transfers than they can accommodate.
AA transfers receive priority. Everyone who has an AA from a community college and isn’t applying to a limited access major is admitted first.
@loller Transfer admission can be a bit more selective than you make it out to be.
Going to use UF’s numbers, since I have those handy
**Transfer Admission by College/b
Accounting: 155 Applications, 14 Admits
Agricultural and Life Sciences: 1,203 Applications, 579 Admits
The Arts: 266 Applications, 133 admits
Business Admin: 1,563 applications, 477 Admits
Engineering: 822 applications, 302 Admits
… Total 10,085 Applications, 3,820 Admits, 3,125 Enrolled
Form the common data set:
At FSU, for the Fall 2015 term:
** Total 6,489 Applications, 2,558 Admits, 1,883 Enrolled**
At UWF (which isn’t as selective as FSU)
** 3,200 Applications, 1,941 Admits, and 1060 Enrolled **
Each of the colleges (within the university) have minimum requirements that have to be met (for GPA, courses taken, etc.). Then some of them are competitive and/or limited access, and those require something better than the minimum requirement.
With that being said, Since Political Science at FSU is not a limited access program. It may be possible to be accepted with a 2.0+ GPA.** Repeating course will help your GPA.**
While the general rule at FSU is that a 3.0 GPA is more likely to be admitted, for under-enrolled programs, I’m sure they often admit <3.0 GPA students.
With 3 Fs, repeating classes will only help your GPA (unless you fail the class again), but most programs will use your transcript as a good basis, and if you have already failed 3 classes they may be hesitant to accept you.
A 3.0 GPA will definitely help, but if your GPA is close to a 2.0 I don’t know that FSU will accept you.
@Gator88NE Also, could you give me a link to where you found that data on admitted students per major? As well as tell me how many were admitted from applications at both UF and FSU for Political Science?
You can google and find the links to FSU and UF’s common data set (which also had transfer data).
UF Political Science is within the college of liberal arts and sciences (CLAS). Here are the transfer requirements:
Political Science: Complete STA 2023 and 3 Political Science courses from: POS 2041, INR 2001, CPO 2001 or POT 2002. Must typically have a minimum 2.5 overall GPA to be competitive. Must typically have a minimum 2.5 GPA on all attempts of these courses to be competitive.
No, limited access does not mean that everyone gets in. There simply isn’t room for FSU (or many universities) to do that.
Limited Access basically means there are additional steps that you must complete in order to be eligible for formal admission to the major, to prevent the most popular majors from becoming simply overwhelmed from the massive number of students.
As a transfer, that usually means that simply meeting any posted minimum requirements will not be sufficient for being accepted by the major and the university. Of course, this is true of many non-limited access majors, too, but usually their requirements are less stringent.
So I’m a Political Science major at MDC in Miami and I’m a bit worried about my future with getting or not getting into UF. I’m currently taking 1 of 3 required courses, and the 4th is to be taken at UF if I’m admitted in the future. My GPA doesn’t meet what they’re looking for which is a minimum 2.5 (let’s just say I’ve been a bit lazy in a few terms). I have a 4 W’s (withdraws) in my grades and an 3 F’s (one of which I’m retaking to replace with a higher grade), as well, a few D’s too and a couple of C’s. I guess what I’m asking is, is UF picky about that? Mind you I have high grades in the classes related to my major. I know maybe for a student applying after high school yeah, but I’m just another transfer. Is that plan for transfer students to be admitted into any FL school from MDC bogus or true? Help!!! Be real.
@wanttobeaflgator No idea. You should contact admissions. But I would think you can keep applying to different colleges within the university. They may only accepted another applications to the same college, if something (like you’ve taken the required prerequisite courses) has changed in your application.
