Is it easy to get a single at Ware?

I'm a freshman M&T entering Penn so I will definitely be living in Ware. Do people who request singles generally get them??
I would really like a single there.

Plus, how are the bathrooms at Ware?

I would also like to know how easy it is to get a single in Ware.

I do know about the bathrooms, though. I went to Penn scholars preview and lived in the quad for 3 days. All the bathrooms are the same. 2 toilet stalls and two showers with one sink and mirror. It’s pretty small, but not too tiny. It’s communal, but only about 10-15 people share a bathroom is what I was told. The bathrooms are also cleaned every 2 days. I didn’t really have a problem with it much. I do wish I could have a single bathroom, but I’ll sacrifice that desire so I can live in the quad first year.

You should call them up and ask how many singles there are available. I was lucky to get a single in the Quad freshman year, there are very few especially in the nicer areas of the quad.

And “all the bathrooms are the same”? That would be a drastic change in the last 10 years or so. The Quad is a collection of many different “halls” so bathrooms ranged from a single no-stall, shower, sink, and toilet on one floor, to four-stalls with toilets, four showers.

Maybe you both should be looking off-campus if you will be picky*. I lived in International House senior year, and really loved it. Amazingly safe and close to campus.

(I have heard that if you have a medical condition or disability, such as asthma or allergies, you can get a single with much less of a problem. Still would not be your own bathroom on campus.)

I don’t think there are THAT many singles in Ware. I lived in it this year and it seems like mostly doubles. As far as the bathrooms go, they are very variable. Some of the bathrooms like in Speakman and Butcher, which are the names of halls in Ware are disgusting, and I would never use them. They always smell. But the bathroom in my hall has good air circulation so its relatively clean.

porkperson, as someone living in Ware now, can you comment on which halls are the better ones (in terms of amenities or good community)? Also, how is the staff in Ware, like the faculty masters and dean? Thanks!

Guys, you need to understand the fundamental layout of the Quad, and how the college house room assignment process relates to that. The Quad is made up of 39 distinct, but connected, dorms, which were built in stages between 1895 and 1954. As a result, those 39 dorms and their various greens and courtyards vary significantly in atmosphere, room size and configuration, and general feel. The 39 dorms are divided up into the 3 college houses in the Quad: Fisher Hassenfeld, Ware, and Riepe. As a result, the room sizes and layouts within each Quad college house also vary significantly, since each encompasses a variety of dorms constructed in different decades. The widest variety of rooms is probably found in Ware, which includes dorms built at various times over a 50-60 period. To get a good idea of this, check out this plan, and click on the individual dorms to see the layout of each and every room therein:

[Penn Quadrangle Room Diagrams](<a href=“Home | Penn Residential Services”>Home | Penn Residential Services)

In general, while the various residential programs are assigned to specific halls and/or dorms (depending on the size of the program) within their respective college houses, you can’t specifiy a particular dorm (e.g., McKean or Baldwin in Fisher Hasenfeld, Morris or Bodine in Ware, or Bishop White or Birthday in Riepe) on your room selection form. You can only pick the college house (or residential program within a particular college house), and then it’s a matter of chance whether, for example, within Ware you’re assigned a room in the 1950s-era Butcher or Speakman, or in the circa-1900 dorms on the opposite side of the Quad.

So it’s really hard to generalize about the rooms or bathrooms in any of the 3 college houses in the Quad, although you should be aware that the entire Quad was recently renovated so that there is now central air conditioning and a fairly uniform level of finish throughout the entire Quad.

Sorry to get your hackles up, 45 percenter, but I fully understand the diversity of rooms in the Quad. In fact, I’ve reviewed the room diagrams site several times trying to get a feel for the different dorms, but was interested in the opinion of someone who actually lives there now. I also inquired about the house staff, something that’s more experience based and not neatly listed or categorized on any website.
Lastly, my situation is unique in that I’m able to choose what dorm I live in, hence these questions - just trying to make the best choice by getting advice from current students!

^ No hackles up here. And I wasn’t directing my comments only at you.

It’s just that we see these same questions on here year after year, not surprisingly, and I completely understand your and other incoming freshmen’s desire to make as well informed housing selections as possible. But at the same time, you have to understand that the living experiences in the Quad houses vary tremendously not only depending on specific location within the Quad, but also based on who happens to be on your hall (and I mean literal hall, as opposed to dorm) in any given year. So while the experience and advice of current or recent students can be somewhat helpful, you just have to realize that each person’s experience is somewhat unique depending on where in the Quad he/she lived, who his/her roommates and hallmates were, and who happened to be his/her RA/GA, residential program head (if applicable), house dean, faculty master, college house fellow, etc. And also keep in mind that each of the 3 college houses in the Quad has at least 400 or so residents, so again, it’s hard to generalize.

But again, I completely understand your desire to be well-informed, and am not trying to discourage that in any way. :)

And by the way, how are you able to choose your individual dorm (out of the 39) within the Quad? Just curious.

Of course - experiences can vary considerably, even within the same building or hall of the Quad. Still, there are some things that are pretty standard: certain dorms are more desirable than others (for whatever reason), professional staff have their own reputations/personalities, etc. You’re absolutely right that everyone on here is just trying to become better informed, and from what I can tell, you do a good job spreading reliable, informed advice.

As for my situation, if you’ll PM me, I’ll be happy to explain :)

45 percenter - didn’t want to leave you hanging here, but unfortunately, I’m not able to send PMs until I reach 15 posts. Just wanted to let you know and as soon as I’m able to, I’ll drop you a note.

Thanks for the explanation. Now get to posting! :p

As a freshman M&T you’re all but guaranteed a single in Ware. Everyone that asked for one in my year got one. You are guaranteed a room in Ware, and I’m 99% sure they allocate all of the M&Ts right after the residential programs and before anyone else, so there’s no reason you shouldn’t get one, unless all of the m&ts ask for singles.
