Hey all, first post here. I'm a sophomore going into junior year. I took the sat and scored a 1600 overall (CR:600 M:500 W:500) without studying or preparing, I plan on retaking May 2014, and again in October 2014. Assuming I study my ass off, is it possible that I can score a 1900-2100 given how much time I have?

Thanks

Yep. Something around 650-630-630 is possible at the very least.

Yes, it’s possible. I’ve worked with a handful of students that improved by more than that, in fact.

However, most kids aren’t willing to put forth the time and effort necessary to improve that much. At least that’s been my experience…

Yes, I’ve also seen kids who increased their score by over 400 points, but it’s a lot of effort, time, and planning.

Could you give me a basis of how I should sort of plan a typical day? Also, I forgot to mention that I haven’t taken Algebra 2 yet and will do so next year.

There’s quite a bit of Algebra II material, so make sure you study that. A prep book should show you what you need to know.
Try doing a chapter every 2-3 days since you have a lot of time. Make sure you constantly review, and take a full practice test every one or two weeks.

Yes. Especially if you practice and study a lot. The first time I took the PSAT in sophomore year i got a 169 with no studying. Then the first time i took the SAT i got a 2010 with some studying (however I did not effectively study). Then recently in May I got a 2200. I know its not the greatest score ever, but I feel its a decent improvement.

Yes its possible. My score went from 1550 to 2000 within four months. I took some classes (very expensive) and studied on my own. Sadly, it did take time away from extra curricular’s and my social life.

Thanks for all the responses everyone!

what classes did you take this year?

Geometry Honors
English 2 Honors
US History Honors
Chem 1 Honors

You probably only wanted to know my math class but yeah those are the main classes.

I think you’ll be fine. Right now, time is on your side. Your score report should show where your weaknesses are; use that as a guide on what things you should focus on. In terms of how to plan out your studying, you can always start small and work your way up. Maybe first try about an hour of practice/studying a day, and move that time around to fit your needs? Also, do make sure you have a strong Algebra background because it’s found quite a lot in the math section. Wish you the best! :)

Hi, I am Uyen. I am going to take SAT exam in October. My aim is about 2000. Can you give me advice? 3 years ago my maximum score was 1860. Is it possible to gain my score now?

Why wouldn’t it be possible, it’s all about how much you study. I got a 1620 in March and my goal is a 2350 by October.

So all I need to do now is to practice as much as I can, right? I am so nervous.

I only ever took the SAT once, so I’m not sure how improvement works, but I the first practice test I took I got an 1880 so I’ll just base it off of that…I got a 2270 on the final SAT I took (760 CR 720 M 790 W).

I studied over the summer from soph to junior year, mostly in August, September, October, took the October SAT.
I did a test club thing where I took practice SATs, so I think I took 11 practice tests overall (in a simulated environment).
I also did practice sections from the blue book, two a day, for about two months.
Just practice a lot. Good luck!

easily, I went from 1400 SAT to 2300+ so yeah its easily possible

Absolutely possible. Here’s my own anecdote of how I went from 1600s range to 2070:

I started going to SAT prep classes the summer after my sophomore year. On my first mock I got around a 1600-1700. Obviously I was quite discouraged since I was aiming 2100+. But here’s what I did over the course of months:
-VOCABULARY! I think that memorizing vocabulary is why my score significantly jumped.
-Math - practice, practice, and practice. That’s all there is.
-Writing - practice, practice, and practice.

Take a look at all of CC’s SAT threads: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/763933-everyone-read-before-posting-best-sat-prep-forum-faqs.html

The essay guide is a gold mine.

Buy the blue book and… see if you can buy some practice tests if you live near a reputable prep center. The 2nd prep center that I went to was able to grab ahold of tests from 2012 and probably 2013. Each test costed around $30. However… I know a better way of finding tests but it depends on where you live. Please pm me for more info.

The bottom line is practice… that’s the only way of improving your score. Sure everyone’s different but if you read all the SAT success stories you should notice that they all relate - all of these people practiced the SAT tests.

Practice Practice Practice! I got a 152 on my soph PSAT and a 2340 single sitting on my most recent SAT.

You have 3-4 months to do it. It’s definitely possible. Mine rose from a 1700 (on a practice) to a 2120. Getting a 1900-2100 doesn’t require magical abilities, just good studying habits and good work ethic. Practice makes perfect.
