Is it unusual to transfer into architecture after your freshman year?

My son goes to an arts high school where his major is studio art. He has done very well in all of his subjects and is applying to top 50 colleges, already accepted at Tulane. Just recently he has begun to think about architecture as a career and major, much too late to think about applying for September, 2010. Is it reasonable for him to take, or even audit, an architecture class as a freshman, and then, if he loves it, apply as an internal transfer student?

That’s definitely reasonable! Unless the studio art major is set up so that one cannot take even one elective, or if the architecture department is extremely stringent about allowing outside majors in, an undergraduate degree should really be about exploring various fields (LibArts schools afford students this opportunity to the greatest extent).

Tulane has architecture program. You should contact them and tell them you want to do architecture, I bet they will allow you. They don’t ask for portfolio for acceptance, so it should be ok.
