I'm a junior and I want to take AP classes. Is it worth it?
I want to challenge myself and my GPA need improving.
My GPA last quarter was a 3.1.
Is a 3.0/4.0 GPA good? My GPA in grades 9 & 10 were both 3.0s.
Would it be worth retaking a class to boost my GPA? I'm considering it.

Input appreciated. :)

Definitely. AP classes are not only a GPA boost but also a good way to get ready for the rigor of college courses. I’m a senior right now and I don’t regret taking the AP’s that I’m taking right now.

Depending on the colleges/universities you’re applying to, the GPA will differ.

It really depends on
- what kind of schools you are looking to get into
- how much time you are willing to invest in the extra workload

your GPA is a 3.0 right now, which is decent depending on what courses you are taking right now and the overall strength of your school. However, students who take APs do not take them to improve their GPA, but to challenge themselves and have strong courses to prepare for college.

If you are putting minimal effort into your studies right now, taking one or two AP classes next year is a good idea. However, if you are working extremely hard in regular/honors classes and getting a 3.0, adding AP classes to your schedule is not a good idea.

Good luck!

Ok sweet thanks! I’m taking regular classes and it’s so boring. All the kids want to do is sleep the entire time, and it doesn’t help me at all. I like a lot of class discussion and that’s not going to happen because everyone is sound asleep.

then I would definitely take AP classes. they will be much more class discussion oriented, and consist of motivated students like yourself.
good luck!

Go for it. You really have nothing to lose and sleeping your way through senior year doesn’t sound like fun.

I don’t see how an AP course would necessarily boost your GPA. Even if AP’s are weighted at your school, they are still usually more rigorous and thus more difficult to get good grades in. At the private school my son attends there is not weighting and no one gets higher than a B in any AP class (it is rare). However, students are encouraged to take the majority of the AP load their senior year (AP’s are only available to juniors and seniors) because admissions counselors like to see that you are challenging yourself.

Keylyme: But there are some AP Classes that are extremely easy (for an AP curriculum), such as AP Statistics, AP Environmental Science, and sometimes AP Psychology. And all AP classes have the same weight.
