Hi, I am a rising senior in American high school and an international student. On June 30, I took TOEFL and got 97 (R: 29/L: 21/S: 23/W: 24). I am going to apply for Northwestern University, Washington University in St. Louis, Brandeis University, UIUC, U of Michigan, U of Miami, and UT Austin. I found out that a couple of schools like Washu, Northwestern, and Brendeis set the minimum score to be 100. I'm just short of 3 points and wonder if I can keep this score for application. Do I have to retake TOEFL and get over 100?

*I heard there are exceptions for requiring TOEFL. I got 630 on the SAT reading (total: 2050) and 27 on ACT english (total: 29). Next year will be my 4th year studting in the US.

I am not sure why you took the TOEFL exam. American High school students are not required to take it. Just submit your SAT score. (630 is great score for UIUC, UMich, UT-Austin but its on the low side for Wash U and NU)

Many schools still require F-1 Visa students to take TOEFL if their native language is not English.

Most schools (all that I know actually) don’t ask international students to take TOEFL if they have 4 years studying in an environment where English is the first language, which is your case. So I don’t think you need to worry about your score, and generally 97 is good enough. I suggest you look up your desired schools’ websites to recheck their TOEFL policy, just to make sure.

Some schools don’t require the TOEFL when your SAT CR is above 600. However, 97 is still quite low for top universities. It’s true that most places require 100+, but not all.
From Northwestern’s website:
“International applicants who complete 3 to 4 years of their secondary school curriculum in English and score 650 or above on the Critical Reading section of the SAT Reasoning Test are not required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score.
There is no minimum score required by Northwestern. Competitive applicants demonstrate a high level of English proficiency and often score 105 or above on the TOEFL iBT or 7.5 or above on the IELTS.”

I didn’t check out the other universities’ policies, but you can do so, it’s almost always in the ‘International Students’ section.

97 is excellent. Almost all schools require 85 or 90; some accept 61 or 79. Only a handful of schools require 100+ and if your SAT CR shows that you can do the work, don’t obsess about it.I’d spend more time improving that SAT score than on the TOEFL.
BTW your list of schools does not contain enough accessible schools, they’re all reach (since at least 2 of your presumed safeties are OOS, they thus become incredibly competitive)
