Is OSU panicking with their admissions

According to the latest data. OSU just accepted 30400 of its applicants. This is about 5400 more than last year and a 57 percent rate. It looks like the Corona VIrus might affect their expectations of enrollment

There is no doubt that this might be the case. I have a feeling that a lot of schools are no longer counting on a large International contingency coming. The bigger problem might be the financial picture which is looking more and more like it is going to become an issue for many.

These are very uncertain times for all of us as well the Universities themselves. The fact that they are accepting an unusual number of applicants it probably shows how they are trying to make sure that they are able to put together the predicted class they had in mind prior to being faced with these unprecedented times. Many prospective students will not even have the ability to tour a prospective school.

Or Ohio State is playing accept more kids and lower our acceptance rate numbers so we look better game. Yes most schools know by now they will be taking a hit on internationals kids and their full tuition payments. I doubt schools like OSU will have to worry, they may have a larger instate number than they would prefer but they will fill every seat and hopefully every dorm bed.

@NJdad07090 Isn’t that the opposite of what they’re doing? Accepting more students raises their acceptance rate and makes them look less selective. And then if the yield goes down (which they seem to be expecting), that also is a negative for them.

I agree. But who knows. I’m not asking admissions what’s going on but I am curious.

@jmsstb Just to clarify, I’m not being critical of OSU, I was only responding to the comment from NJdad. I think with all of this coronavirus uncertainty every university is throwing their previously used models for yield out the window.

@rbc2018
I agree. I was hoping my D’s top choice school was doing that but no such luck.

A close relative is headmaster of an elite private high school…he’s on a first name basis with many admissions folks at top universities and tells me many are indeed in a panic mode this year…lots of students will have a better chance at their dream school this fall than ever before because of the loss of internationals…my son applied as a transfer to 7 good schools and was accepted by all…OSU being one of them…good luck all.
