Is there a SINGLE BS/MD I have a chance in hell at?

Here are my stats. I think that my recs will be great and although I suck at writing, I'll do my best on the essay and make sure it is very good to others and me, but is there ANY FREAKING BS/MD I can get into!! I want to be a doctor or dentist SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad, but I'm afraid I'm not going to get into medical school/dental school, which is why I really want to do a BS/MD (or the equivalent for Dental). So does anyone know of any that I have a good chance of getting into (no allopathics please)?

Note: Right now I have a 3.897 UW GPA, but I should finish high school with around a 3.85-3.87, or at very worst 3.8 UW for fresh-senior year because I missed a few days due to a dental procedure, and my grades aren't doing so well right now

*class rank UW right now = 38/515. Weighted = 30/515. Right now I'm top 6%, but will probably wind up finishing high school in the lower end of top 10%

Obviously you don't want to be a doctor OR dentist that bad or you would only be attracted to one profession. Your EC's show that not only are you not familiar with either field, but that you have no (READ: ZERO) shot at getting into any combined program. You could have a 5.0 GPA with a 2400 and you still would have no shot with those EC's.

Makshim makes a good point. You NEED medically related ECs.

as for choosing between combined med and combined dental, makshim makes another good point. Knowing that you want to be one of two things is NOT good enough for these programs. they WILL find out at some point that you are applying for combined med and dent programs (even if you lie to yourself and apply to both), and will auto-deny you. Your ECs make you look like a mathematician/scientist more than doctor/dentist.

Even with ECs, if you can't narrow your choices down to one, it ISN'T going to work. I have a friend who wanted to do BS/MD and BS/JD(law) programs. He went for a couple interviews last year and realized that he wasn't SURE what he wanted to do, got rejected from all the programs, and went on to normal undergrad thankful that he hadn't locked himself into an agreement to become either a doctor or a lawyer.

Don't lock yourself into becoming a doctor/dentist if you're not 100% sure that you want to go into that profession.

Your reason for wanting to go to a BS/MD program is worrying.

-I'm doing a dental exploring program at OHSU
-I'm planning on shadowing either a doc or dentist during a good part of the summer.
-Will try and do an anatomy-related research project during the summer.

Will that stuff count as health-related ECs?

And also, come on, I know I'm not as smart as you guys, but I know I have to narrow it down to one. Right now, I'm leaning toward dentistry, but trust me, I will have that figured out by summer.

thanks for the replies though

PM replied to. Your brain research sounds interesting, OP, especially if you actually do something there and get your name on it and it is published. That's something that would impress an admissions committee.

Take the SAT -- you'll need to.

I did bad though. I only got a 1900 or something like that (1310 CR+Math). I like the ACT better because its not as lame

take a million practice tests (SATS)
each in one sitting

go for it - good luck

yeah but you got a 24 on the science section...that's gonna hurt ALOT. Your gpa is slightly above average, and your lack of med ec's will hurt. Granted, with those few dental ec's there, the dental outlook looks kinda better...but its still iffy, especially with those standardized test scores.

Most programs want a 1450 (CR + Math). Try again and hope you do better. If not, there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing it 4 years. Maybe you'd be better off and get into a med school that you like more. Then again, being pre-med in college = 4 years of hell...

I’m applying to a BS/MD program.
Considering my stats and the fact that I’m an “asian” international student with an American Citizenship, which universities(With the particular program) would be realistic for me?

Appreciate the help people.

david… - “Asian” is not minority applying to bs/md, but rather large group. Apply widely, some of them not very known, and I believe that you have a chance.

California… - you need better stats. You might get lucky, apply see what happen. Check out U of Toledo. They have 2 bs/md programs.

I had similar stats as you and I got into a BS/MD program, which I graduated from (in med school now). My grades were actually a lot worse, but our scores were similar. Just apply broadly and see what happens. You DO have a shot, but make sure you get those medical/dental EC completed.

@ MiamiDAP
according to the collegeboard website,
for University of Toledo:

97% In-state students
3% Out-of-state students
<1% American Indian/Alaskan Native
2% Asian/Pacific Islander
16% Black/Non-Hispanic
3% Hispanic
74% White/Non-Hispanic
1% Non-Resident Alien
5% Race/ethnicity unreported

Only 3 % are out-of-state and 2% are Asian
So I don’t think I have a chance for getting accepted to the program in U of Toledo.
Or are these stats not applied to the program???

I was born in Los Angeles, California but I spent almost all my years in Korea and where I live right now, Canada. Would I be considered an “in-state” student if I were to apply to a university in California?
If not, could anyone (enrolled in the bs/md program) please list universities in the eastern region of the United States for which I have a chance?

Thanks again.

@MiamiDAP
isn’t the other one called BA/MD?
Could one be able to get into med school through the program?

Are you a junior or senior? Its a little late to apply if you are a senior, but you would need to check the due dates. Google bs/md programs. If you are a junior I would keep working at the medical ecs. Also I would not think you are a California resident if you do not live there.

It could be. One is biomedical engineering in UG, another is biology in UG. I do not know stats, I advise you to apply. Biomed engineering is co-op that takes 4 years instead of 5, so it is accelerated. Contact them, ask questions. There were OOS. Maybe not so many because Toledo programs are not well known. Both programs are combined with U of Toledo College of Medicine (whatever name as of now, I am not sure. it used to be called MCO, then MUO, then it merged with U of Toledo) and without requirement of MCAT, which is a huge plus.

Thanks MiamiDAP!
