Is there ever a reason not to apply early action?

Is there ever a good reason not to apply by Nov 1? I was just wondering why applicants would wait. Maybe some wait until December to get duel-enrollment final grades, or do some even wait until Feb 1 deadline so their entire semester 1 grades on used? But I thought only 9-11th grades were used, so I don't know.

The last bit you said is the only reason I can think of to not apply early action other than pure procrastination, which was coincidentally my excuse for not doing it.

Sorry, I was editing my post. Was the part you’re referring to about wanting duel enrollment final grades on your transcript?

EA is a great option. It is so nice to have an acceptance before Christmas.

Anybody who takes Michigan seriously should apply EA. Even universities with “Restrictive EA”, like HYPS, do not include public institutions in their restriction, which means that applicants can apply EA to a restrictive EA school and still apply EA to Michigan.

I can’t think of a single reason not to apply early action. The worse case scenario is you end up going in with a slightly weaker transcript, but then you get deferred anyway and generally asked for pending 1st semester or trimester grades. Strong candidates get accepted quickly after that process since admissions tend to dribble out after the EA announcements…so there is nothing to lose IMO.

^^^ you said weaker transcript, so Mich will factor in courses taken past 11th grade if you wait and send then a transcript with either duel enrollment grades in Dec or semester grades in Jan? I know many schools only look at 9th-11th, unless you’re deferred and they request 12 grade first semester follow up

^^ Can someone please answer the question about only 9-11th grades counting?

Some people might use that window to improve SAT/ACT scores or wait on award notices? Just a thought.

I didn’t apply early action.

When you’re taking 6 APs and have football practice from 3-7 every day, its pretty hard to find time to write/perfect essays. Indoor track season wasn’t as intense and I knew that ahead of time. I actually had my essays pretty well completed by Nov 1 but I decided to use a couple extra weeks to continue revising.

I’m sure many, many other students who are busy during the fall have the same issue.

I’m about 95% sure that Michigan will look at your first semester senior year assuming you are deferred or if you apply late enough. I remember one of the deferred letters implied that they wanted to see first semester grades.
