-will be involved in most of the same activities, clubs this year too.

& for what it matters have relatives (not parents) and teachers that are william and mary alumni.

I would value and highly appreciate any advice for an improved transcript and my chances at getting into these schools, particularly William and Mary

*SINCE I AM A JUNIOR YOU WILL BE GIVING ME ADVICE I CAN PUT INTO ACTION, ADVICE THAT I CAN ACTUALLY PUT TO USE (UNLIKE THE CURRENT APPLYING SENIORS)
please don't hesitate to chance-me, ill chance everyone back who posts links to their discussions. :]

They care about your personal life, plays a huge factor...unless you're applying to Oxford or Cambridge, which you're not. It seems like you are a good student involved in some activities, it must have been something completely dramatic that changed your life.

I think you'll have great chances, as long as you do well on the SAT, and can adequately explain your "story" as it relates to your poor sophomore grades.

Also, if anyone has any experiences with being either accpeted, rejected, deffered or waitlisted to uva, william and mary or washington and lee, please share!
thanks

much too soon to tell without test scores and other such information. but ill just answer your title question. yes, there is most definitely still hope at any school. keep working hard and gl~!

I am a senior at William and Mary. What is your cumulative GPA? What is your estimated class rank?

A college will not overlook your sophomore grades as they relate to your overall gpa. I wouldn't focus on an explanation of that unless it's very, very unusual circumstances. Everyone has an "explanation" and adcoms are very in tune to this. Suffice to say that they will know and recongnize that you have turned things around. Now THIS fact is going to count.

I may PM you as I have a bit of advice for you. First, let me know your gpa and class rank.

Relax (easy for me to say, I know), because I know you are going to do just fine. Keep on doing what you are doing. Great job turning things around, by the way.

pedsox, my overall gpa right now is a 3.8 and my class rank is 45 out of 295.
i know that sounds bad, but that was at the end of sophomore year and i got all a's for this semester so im not sure how much that will go up with 3 ap classes.
& were you in or out of state when you were accepted to w&m?
thanks

The info you provided helps. I say you have a very good shot. Your GPA and class rank is good. Sounds like your SAT's will be good as well. Keep doing what you are doing. You are an involved student with good EC's.

As for me, I am an in-state male. I was in the top 5% of a large, competitive, public school graduating class. My GPA was over 4.0. My SAT's were not good. I took them 3 times and could only get a 1290. I did take the ACT and got a 31. I don't know if that helped, but I submitted it. I took the most challenging curriculum offered. For me, I think it helped that William and Mary was my first choice for college. I made sure they knew that. I had an interview, I toured and visited the school several times. I had an overnight visit. I went to several summer offerings/programs. I did not apply early decision...........probably should have as it would have made the whole experience less stressful. I also applied to UVA with my bad SAT's and was accepted there as well. The "feel" of William and Mary appealed to me. I haven't been wrong. I love it here.

You certainly have done a great job in high school. You will land in a good situation, for sure. You are on your feet now and appear to be very focused. I have no doubt that the colleges on your list would consider you quite an asset. Dial your worry back, you'll have many choices.

I can relate, w&&m is my FIRST choice, followed behind by uva, but they have gotten so competitive.....im worried.
I'm taking practice quizzes for the sat almost everyday and i think that will help when i take it in march. i know that both w&&m and uva now require that act's are submitted, so im going to need to make sure i score 30ish. but my problem is i don't know how/where to start to get my foot into the door, im pretty close to W&&M and i know alumni and i have friends that are going there. i didn't think they offer interviews or do anything for juniors but i could be wrong..
and the early decision is a question that really gets me confused.
i heard that one has a better chance at getting accepted if they apply early decision, but according to my guidance counselor i shouldn't apply then because i would be compared with the "best of the best".
this doesnt make sense to me at all.
why would an earlier admissions cycle, contain so much more competition than regular admission? (if this is true....??)
it seems to me that the best of the best wouldn't want to apply early decision because of their good chances at getting into ivy leagues, and other schools, the best of the best would have the advantage of seeing all their options before they commit to one.
what would you, pedsox, suggest? can you tell me what you think about ed?
basically what im saying is i really do want to apply early decision to get the hell wait over (and because the school is my first choice), but i dont know if its really easier to get in.....
&do they have anything going on/tours/etc this weekend at W&&M?

^ i hope that made sense, my millions of thoughts and worries crammed into a paragraph...
