I was aware of the types of degrees offered at both universities. I’m just trying to find out if UF is really a better overall school even though my mind is already made up.

Vex, you’ve ran into the UF/FSU rivalry, so expect such statements from both sides.

“UF is miles better” is based on UF being more selective and higher rated. It has a significant larger endowment, is award a significant larger amount of research funds (due to it’s engineering and med schools) and it’s grads (via it’s law school) dominate politics in Florida. However, if you’re looking at CS (and not Engineering, for example), the difference is minor.

UF is the higher ranked school, but that’s not the only reason for choosing a school. With CS, you’re fine with FSU. If you go to grad school, you may want to look at UF, but once again, with CS the difference is not that great.

Both schools are culturally similar (parties, politics, girls/boys…etc). Gainesville (population about 120K) is a college town, while around FSU’s campus, Tallahassee(population around 180K) also has that college town feel. Both schools have around 32,000 undergrads.

Both schools, being large state schools, support most programs/majors, so expect a similar mix of students on campus. About 14% of students at FSU are in Frats and sororities, while 15% are at UF.

Really, it comes down to your major, as CS you’ll fine your undergrad experience similar at both schools. While UF may have an edge in employment (it is higher ranked), it’s not that much of an edge with CS.

One note on the programs offered at UF and FSU. FSU offers a standard CS program; UF also offers such a program(in the CLAS college), but most take the Computer Engineering route (in the Engineering college), which can include more focus on hardware. For example: Intel is a significant recruiting of UF’s Comp Engineers. But if hardware is not of interest, then the standard CS program at FSU world meet your needs.

Good Luck!

^ Thank you. That was the most complete answer I’ve gotten so far.

^…Bump…^

LOL…please don’t bump 6 month old threads…start a new one! :)

Neither is really better than the other. Go with whichever is cheaper. Outside of the deep south, no one really knows the difference.
