Is UVA worth the Out of state cost?

Is UVA worth the out-of-state cost for its two-year BS in Commerce program?
I got into the McIntire School as a community college transfer from NYC.

No one can answer this without further context. “Worth it?” based on what? Will you need leverage to pay for it? What would you do with the money if you didn’t spend it on UVA? What advantages do you feel it will give you over an in state option that is more affordable?

If it is affordable (no hardships, no or minimal debt) then its a great school.

From your other posts, money seems to be an issue.

If UVA isn’t comfortably affordable look elsewhere.

What are your alternatives? Is there a CUNY or SUNY program that would work for you? It seems to me that the advantage of being in NYC would outweigh anything that UVA could do for you.

I got into Zicklin School at Baruch College which will cost me around $15k for two years as a finance major. Also got into Columbia but not considering it since it’s over $100k. I am not getting any aid from FAFSA because my EFC is $9718.

Now, I am only considering UVA and Baruch. I would like to work either as an investment banker or in big companies like Google, Uber, or Facebook. My major is finance.

Thank you!

What is UVA’s net COA? How much debt would you take out to pay the net coa?

The odds of getting a job in investment banking or with a major high tech company are small so you will likely need to expand your horizons in terms of the job market.

I would advise that you stay in NYC, go to Baruch, try to get an internship or job for this summer and part time for school year if possible, and plan for an MBA from a more prestigious institution.

You got into Columbia from community college, but no financial aid? With an EFC of under 10K? Go back to them and appeal your financial aid. That doesn’t seem right. But if you got into Columbia from community college, you’ll get into a decent MBA program, too, to go to at night while working in the city, and your employer may pay for it.

There’s much we don’t know about OP’s financial situation. Columbia’s COA is $85k, so OP may have received financial aid. Columbia uses CSS Profile to determine need, not FAFSA, and we have no idea what is in OP’s CSS profile that could have resulted in less aid than one might think based on FAFSA only.

Columbia does meet full need for transfer students pursuing their first degree (not sure if that’s true for General Studies, again, not sure what school OP applied to). OP can certainly ask Columbia FA to relook at their financials, it would also be helpful to know UVA’s net COA to compare.

ETA: looks like Op is an independent student and was accepted to Columbia school of general studies which is not affordable for them Columbia Transfer - #10 by sgopal2

Detailed destination report for UVA is available online for commerce. Lots of kids to NYC for internships and jobs. What is the cost for UVA? They meet need, even for transfers (I think).

FAFSA doesn’t “give” aid. It determines your eligibility for federally funded grant money…and the student Direct Loan. You are eligible for a $7500 Direct Loan as a third year student.

It sounds like the poster DID get some aid from Columbia as their out of pocket costs are $50,000 a year…and the COA at Columbia is much higher than that!

FYI…based on another thread, OP is an independent student (27 years old) so actually qualifies for $11,500 loans each of junior and senior years.

That will help.

Hello,
Yes, you are right. I got into Columbia GS because I had some gap years. I wasn’t eligible to apply to CC or SEAS. I did get a yearly PTK scholarship of $20k but it wasn’t enough. I am 27 years old and an independent student that’s why I don’t get aid at all! Even at Baruch, I will have to pay the full in-state tuition.

So, what is the cost to you for UVA?

I haven’t received the financial aid package yet.

Nobody can advise you without knowing the cost.

Hi
So I got the financial aid package tpday from UVA. I was offerred an institutional scholarship of $64k which makes my total net cost for the first year is $21k.
The BS program is a two year program so around $42k total cost. Is it worth the cost to attend UVA over Baruch College which will cost me around $16k in two years?
Thank you!

How would you pay the UVA $42k and the Baruch $16k?
