Hi. I really want to go to either Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, NYU ( yeah i know, it's not an Ivy) or U Penn. I was just wondering if having legacy is really that big of an importance factor at any of these schools. I am a male latino on the west coast, and I was also wondering what SATs I should be shooting for if I want to be accepted to these fine schools. Thank you all so much

Shoot for at least 2250+ and yes legacy (esp. big donors) helps alot.

For HPC, 2200 will put you in the league. Then you're essays, courses and GPA will come into play. For NYU, I would say the 2200 increases your chances of admission greatly, but even 2100 would be competitive.

so if i had a 2100 then it would pretty much be out of the question to apply to say, Harvard?

2310 at least.

Harvard is so much more than SAT scores... even if you got a 2400 it wouldn't guarantee anything.

but yes, 2300 at least for Harvard.
2100 would get you into NYU and Columbia.
with a strong application, 2000 could probably get you into NYU and Columbia as well, given your URM status

i have a bunch of ecs. like two varsity sports w/ captain, NHS, class president, starting an organization in my town helping minorities etc. Blu, what does Harvard want besides SAT scores?

another school really quick, UC Berkeley, i'm out of state, what SAT? thank you

I'm sorry but if you haven't applied to Berkeley or any other UCs, it's too late.

Legacy isn't that important unless your parents like built a library or something along those lines. At least a 2200 for most Ivies would be acceptable I think.

National/International Competitions, awards, collegiate research, prestigious summer programs, excellence in an instrument, etc

stuff like sports, NHS, or class president alone typically doesn't make the cut for Harvard.

unless you REALLY are able to blow away your essays, show passion, etc

I know legacy at Penn matters greatly during ED but not during RD. Each school has different policies regarding this.

Legacy is helpful in admissions but it probably won't get you in if you're unqualified, unless, as a previous poster said, your parents built a library.

If you don't have a hook, you should probably aim for 2300+.

So false and NYU and Columbia are incomparable. A 2100 for NYU is great for Columbia its below average...shoot for 2200+

im not applying to schools this year, next year. i'm just trying to see what i need to aim for

what would count as a hook?

anyone? ten char.

You all are idiots. I don't want to sound racist, but the OP is latino! That is a very rare commodity. He has a decent shot at getting into these schools.

^ Exactly what I was about to say.

Realistically speaking, your URM status is a HUGE hook for you. You will be competitive for admission at any of those schools with a 2150 or perhaps even a 2100, especially with the leadership positions you have.
