Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship Applicants 2019-2020

@Snekfest I’m so happy you got it and so excited to meet you in August!

@RainbowBritey I’m not sure at the moment. I’m still waiting on 4 more schools, and I got the regents scholarship to Davis, but Davis doesn’t have a debate team. I’ve been accepted to Smith, so that’s my number one at the moment as far as schools I’ve heard back from. Private school aid is so generous that I’d really have to pick private over UCs.

With the JCKF scholarship, I’m thinking you can choose whichever school you like or is that contingent on your husband’s financial aid?

What’s your top choice?

@FinishingTheApp I took the survey! You may want to post it again!

@ARousseau JKCF has made it far easier for me because I could attend any school that accepted me now, however, my husband and I have a “no loans” agreement so our decision is contingent upon his aid offers. Luckily we have been offered full rides to all of the schools that have accepted us so far. Of our acceptances to date, Williams is just so far ahead in terms of resources and support and class-size, etc. They also went above and beyond to make our whole family feel like part of their community, it is going to be a really tough offer to beat. We have four schools in so far, with five more to go. We have EWS interviews this week, and after that, we should start hearing back from more of the private colleges, I suppose.

@RainbowBritey That’s what I was thinking because of your particular situation. You both have EWS interviews? Wow, that’s incredible! I selfishly hope that EWS doesn’t take spots away from normal transfer. If you both get in and EWS spots are counted with normal transfer spots, we have no chance since California has few spots. But I’m happy for your both either way. I want anyone with a family to do well for their kids—that’s huge.

I didn’t apply EWS because Yale capped the amount of aid they would give. I wouldn’t have been able to go, even though EWS would be what I would fall under.

I’m glad you got into Williams! I only applied to Swarthmore because they seemed like the perfect fit.

@arousseau they certainly prioritized regular transfer interviews over EWS interviews, my regular transfer friend had her interview over a week ago while they requested interviews with us in early April but only scheduled them for after regular transfer interviews had been completed. The way I understood EWS aid, we would be eligible for the same tuition and room and board funding that regular transfers get? This seems fairly reasonable although still less than some schools who have included budgets for travel and for general expenses, and considered family expenses in their offers. Tell me what you know about the difference between EWS and regular transfer aid? This stuff is all so useful.

I like both Swarthmore and Williams TBH, I really loved my Swarthmore interviewer and my other interactions with the staff have been pleasant. They also have a pretty generous transfer acceptance rate compared to similar schools. Williams just really impressed me because they use their small size to their advantage; it allows them to be genuinely flexible and accommodating and they are working hard to create a real commitment to transfer equity… releasing results in time for transfers to take part in previews is the most obvious example of this in action.

@RainbowBritey EWS stated they don’t give you housing, meaning you don’t live on campus. That’s why I didn’t apply. It also said aid was capped at tuition, but who knows.

But I was talking about transfer spots, not interviews, meaning certain schools have X amount for certain transfer programs and Y amount for others. Smith and Wellesley, for instance, have spots for transfer and then remaining spots for their non-traditional applicants. Applicants for one don’t have any effect on the other.

But how you feel about Williams is how I feel about Swarthmore.

@ARousseau the EWS financial aid page says “Eli Whitney students who qualify for need-based financial aid and are enrolled in at least two course credits per term will receive scholarship funds equal to the cost of a standard Yale College room. Eli Whitney students do not live on campus, so this aid above the cost of tuition is available for students to use toward off-campus living expenses.”
So while I understand wanting to dorm if you can (I totally would if I didn’t have a family) they do offer some aid towards living expenses. If my husband and I were both to get in (ha!) then we could combine our “room-aid” towards rent.

@RainbowBritey They have conflicting information on their site for aid. Plus, you’re getting in. It’s obvious, so no (ha!) is necessary!

Here’s what I see: “Beginning with the fall 2019 term, Eli Whitney students who qualify for need-based financial aid and are enrolled in at least two course credits per term will receive scholarship funds equal to the cost of a standard Yale College room. Eli Whitney students do not live on campus, so this aid above the cost of tuition is available for students to use toward off-campus living expenses.”

This is new and wasn’t on their site when I researched. But they get weekly lunches, which doesn’t help me with food. I’m a little upset they’ve changed information (it wasn’t this a few months back), but what can you do.

Here’s another part of their website: “If your college experience was delayed or interrupted at any point for five or more years, then you may apply to the Eli Whitney Students Program. Unlike transfer students, Eli Whitney students have the flexibility to attend on a part-time or full-time basis; their tuition costs vary depending on the number of course credits per semester; their Yale Scholarship is capped at the cost of tuition; and on-campus housing is not available.”

Hello guys,

Do you know what are the chances for a semi finalist to be selected again the following year and get selected this time?. Do you know of any case like that?

@CriticalEye I have read about a couple of applicants who were selected as semifinalists 2 years in a row, but since this is the second hyear, idk if they are going to win. I would say you would need to make a pretty dramatic change/improvement to your application to win the next time around.

@CriticalEye literally funnel the same amount of energy you put in this year and you should be fine with making it to semis again. I recommend you start doing more things to add to your resume starting NOW.

That being said, I just got notified that I wasn’t a winner this year. I also know a few other semis from last year that didn’t win this year. However, one person applied for the third time this year and got it! It’s all a matter of prep, determination, and a little bit of luck.

If this is something you really want, then I say that there is absolutely no shame in reapplying next year.

@ARousseau Thanks for taking it! Here is the link again:

@FinishingTheApp how were you notified? and keep your head up, you’ll continue to achieve greater heights!

Tomorrow’s the big day everyone! It looks like they will be sending out emails before 12 pm EST.
I’m pretty disappointed in myself for not applying to more schools. It wasn’t until after my semi-finalist designation did I even consider anything other than Portland State, and then at that point it was nearly too late. I did get an app into Harvard and Yale EWSP but I have not been contacted by EWS for an interview, even after messaging them nearly two weeks ago with notification that I was selected as a JKCF Scholar. PSU has always been my priority, but now I’m feeling foolish because I wish I would have gotten an application into Cornell, Columbia, and Brown. Oh well, c’est la vie!

It is not too late to apply to columbia, regular deadline is June 1st

and I emailed Cornell and they said they accept late applications

https://www.jkcf.org/our-stories/2019-cooke-transfer-scholars/ here you go guys!! The official list is here congratulations to everyone who is selected and extremely prideful moment for all the semifinalists who have achieved this much!! Many more accomplishments to come!!

Hello guys, I hope all is well with you. I am wondering if any of you heard anything back from any Ivy-league school???

@Dreambbig nothing yet as of Cornell/ Stanford even tho not ivy or USC either. There was a small wave of Cornell acceptances and rejections. Same with USC, but a lot are still waiting. Was a tiny acceptance most of which were TTP for USC and GT/TO for Cornell.
