here’s what you gotta do. you gotta put on a black robe and trace the outline of a pentagram, muttering incomprehensibly.
i haven’t been contacted by the foundation either. like @jck2475 i was told april 30-may 1.

Hi all, my school surprised me on Friday. Foundation called me yesterday. Congrats to all the winners and looking forward to meeting you all this July!
I haven’t seen my rejection letter yet. No calls either. I’m so frustrating now since all of you have heard the foundation’s reply. My school doesn’t have a representative so it’s hard for me to know what really happens.
@optimisticky - Oh sorry. I thought they called you because in one of your posts you said your school dean or president let you know you won and said the foundation was going to call you an hour later.
@karen16994 - It sounds like you won. Have you talked to everyone you could think of at your school who might have been contacted by JKC? Maybe they are planning on surprising you today
@cmbradley2015 Today, I’m working and have no class schedule. I can’t think of anyone to contact because my school doesn’t know about jack kent cooke at all :)) maybe I will talk to my PTK advisor tomorrow
I appreciate the fact that they told me I was in the semi-finalist but didn’t win. I know this scholarship was very difficult to get but it was my last shot to stay in this country and get my bachelor. As an international student, I have to pay triple tuition and can’t do loans. My family can’t not afford to pay the tremendous amount of money that most of 4 year universities request. I guess it’s time for me to pack my bags, and get ready to get deported then. it’s just tough to give up my dreams after four years of hard work here.
@vincefan contact the admissions offices of some of the schools you’re interested in or the school you’re currently attending. share your circumstances and financial hardship and see what comes of it.
being passed up by the foundation is a major blow but you can recover from it, i think. people have kindness in them and generosity, even stinky old admissions office people.
Thank you for your advice. i tried to be optimistic but i got two rejections in one week including this so it just got tougher. I’ll keep trying my best and hope for something good will happen.
@karen16994 - Any news???
@vincefan - It is so difficult for international students here, I know. Never give up though! You only lose when you choose to give up, until then you simply have temporary defeat. I know it is easy to say such a thing, but believe me, I have lived by that motto for 12 years now and it seems to be the best policy. Sometimes my defeats have been followed by opportunities that I never could have dreamed of and from the most unsuspecting sources. For example, I once thought I burned a bridge with a really good employer because I quit the company on bad terms and started my own business that competed with them. I didn’t speak to them for years. After my first semester of full time school was done I needed to find a job very quickly or I was about to be homeless. I wasn’t having any luck finding a job that paid enough or offered enough work to be able to afford my rent and bills. Just when I was at the end of my rope my old employer called me up because he heard I was looking for a job, I told him I was sorry for the way I left things and he said he harbored no bad feelings. To my complete surprise he offered me my job back with guaranteed full-time hours and at the same exact pay I was making when I left (which was actually $5.00 more per hour that I was trying to get from other places!) Since then the relationship has been so awesome as they let me take entire semesters off from work so that I can focus on school and then they are always calling me up around the end of the semester asking when I am coming back because they have so much business and work for me to do. I could not possibly have asked for a better situation. But just before that day that my boss called me to offer me my job back, I was so depressed, and so scared, and really should have been packing my stuff to live in my car, but I refused to give up and I was going all over the place asking for work. Turns out that one of the potential employers I went to begging for work knew my old boss, and gave him a call to ask him how I was as an employee, and that’s how my old boss found out I was looking for a job. Had I just thrown in the towel that day and not kept looking for a job, I wouldn’t have gotten such an amazing opportunity and would have lost my place (which would’ve definitely been bad because rents have skyrocketed in my area since I got into my place I have now). So don’t give up! Don’t pack your bags yet! Make some calls, let people know about your situation, let them know how hard you are willing to work to finish your bachelors degree here in the US. Never accept defeat and you’ll never be truly defeated.
@cmbradley2015 I was rejected, too. It seemed like they forgot to email me until I emailed them. And the lady at the foundation I talked to was so rude. She almost yelled at me @@ Anyways, I felt so disappointed now.
But I do have back up. I applied to SMU and I’m trying to get the full tuition scholarship which is also very competitive. But I hope i can get it praying
@vincefan i’m also an international student. Don’t give up. I deeply understand how you feel. But there are some opportunities for you out there. During my second year, I got 2-3 scholarships out of more than 10 scholarships that i applied to, and it helped me cover all the out of state tuition with some extra money for living expenses. So never losing your hope. i believe that you are an extraodinary individual to be a semi-finalist. You will never know what will come to you ^^ i wish you best luck
@karen16994 Didn’t receive an email or call either, so I’m guessing I’m in the same boat about a rejection letter never being sent over. Oh well!
i would contact admissions with a gorgeous e-mail briefly noting my achievements. truthfully dumb enthusiasm will impress an admissions counselor more than your brainy SAT figures. the world has no shortage of intellectuals or high performing students. the world has a great deficit of students like us. students with unmet financial needs that can compete with students in higher socio-economic statuses, who are devoted to upsetting the systems of oppression, violence, and inequality with insight and sensitivity to the challenges working class and working poor populations go through.
just to apply for the JKCF you needed a 3.5 or higher. so all of us are clearly dedicated. just go out there, e-mail or phone these people, and convince them that they would be fools to let you out of their reach.
Hello, I have a question regard my college. It doesn’t have an honors college but I do take rigor courses and in honor society clubs as well as officer. Did any win this scholarship who she/he came from a college without honors courses? thanks
