@georgemk I don’t want to destroy any hope you have, just talking about statistics and big advantages people have who go to the right schools and know the right people. Your story is very unique, and you even started AIDS/HIV clubs, which shows leadership. If the old system was in place, you would not have even been able to apply, which is why I think it’s a good thing that it’s now an open application process instead of only some schools sending their favorites (I think @adorse26 even said they wouldn’t help him/her).
A friend of mine is from Ghana, won one of the immigration lotteries and she got an amazing scholarship through a local university. Have you applied for other big scholarships? Your story is the kind a lot of foundations look for.
@nekozuki I don’t know of any other scholarship, those I am exposed to are requiring only US citizens which I am not. Please if you know of any scholarships that I might qualify let me know. I don’t think you are killing our hopes you are preparing some of us for the outcome so that we may not be surprise and that is a good thing. Thanks
@georgemk Your story is incredible, I really hope you win
@kyriephilbrook From the stats of last year forum, there is no hope, people had some crazy great stuff and were never selected is hard to predict what exactly they look for. @nekozuki thanks for the link, information from last year applicants makes it very difficult to predict the outcome.
Does anyone else have any recent developments or talked to anyone else from the foundation?
@georgemk I definitely don’t think the situation is hopeless, especially given how fascinating your circumstances are.
It’s only Monday morning, so give it more time.
It’s nice that they want to tell schools prior so they have an opportunity to surprise students, but I would rather know a week early and just receive a direct phone call. It’s tough when your life decisions are waiting on this outcome.
@kyriephilbrook, I got a email back from someone this morning. @nekozuki, from the person I got an email from this morning, I was told they are trying to notify the students before the school this year and the school a week or two later. And that as of now, the person I talked to from the foundation said that they should be telling applicant if they won this week or next and a week or two after they will tell all others who applied.
Thanks @Adorse26, please lets keep ourselves updated when any one gets any new information
Thanks @adorse26! Reading through last year’s forum, I felt so bad for the applicants, as you had to guess whether someone would “surprise” you or not.
@Adorse26 Thanks for the info! & @nekozuki, I agree. It was so sad, especially in one case where a student thought her advisor was waiting until after the weekend to tell her during a PTK ceremony. How crushing! To show up hoping for a surprise that doesn’t come. I’m glad they are doing it differently this year
@Adorse26 i think that still open, we are not sure whether they will do it this week or not.
I talked to the same person again to see if he can give me a better time of when scholars should hear something. All he says is that it will be before the end of March. When I asked him when the latest that we should hear something he said the end of March. This month has about eight more days so maybe we will hear something in the next few days.
The anticipation is killing me. It’s always on my mind!
@kyriephilbook and @Adorse26 and @Nekozuki have been trying so hard to forget this and study for my test and others but is not just working. When I try to explain to explain to people around me they don’t get it, they just tell me to forget it but is not that easy. It looks like this is the only place I get people who understand me better on this scholarship waiting anxiety. Is any one experiencing the same thing?
@georgemk I definitely am! Whether or not I win completely changes the course of my life. There are so many moving parts and there’s so much to consider, it’s weighing heavily on my mind. I know that if late evening of March 31st comes and I haven’t heard anything, I will burst into tears lol, but at least I will know what the answer is.
@kyriephilbrook, who knows they might still be handing decisions in early. I just would like to know because I plan on going to visit one of the schools I was accepted into around the second week of April. It would be nice to know if I can submit my deposit then. It would be kind of strange to find out that I won on April 6th since it’s my birthday.
I wish there were many of us (i mean applicants) to help ourselves emotionally, this is just killing, too much adrenaline
I really want to know because it will give me complete and utter relief of knowing I’ll have a stable place to live, and always have food to eat when I can dorm and get a meal plan. I have had to worry about food and shelter for so long now that I forget what it’s like not to have to worry
