Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship- 2011

Hello, everyone! I just wanted to see if I can gather anyone who was nominated for this year's scholarship by their two-year institutions. I was nominated by my institution, yay! I've never posted here before, so I just gathered a basic list of questions that I found in another thread just to get an idea of where we are all at.

If possible, list all of this information:

*just bumping

Where are you from? Cheyenne, WY

Current School? Laramie County Community College

What schools have you applied to? Penn State, Amherst College, Bryn
Mawr College, University of Pittsburgh, Brown University, Gettysburg College

1 choice and why? Penn State because it is considered a public Ivy with a huge Alumni network. The University offers a great deal of opportunity while providing a safe environment for me to raise my kids.

Accepted anywhere? Penn State, still waiting on the other colleges.

Intended major? English

Current Earn Credits/GPA? I believe I have 65-70 credits, I am taking 16 this semester, and I have a 3.89 GPA.

Community College EC’s? I am the Vice President of Service for our chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. I was the Fundraiser for the International Ambassadors. I work on the Literary Magazine. I organized the Honors in Action project for our chapter, a Domestic Violence Awareness Campaign, and many other projects.

Volunteer Activities? I was the event chair for the Relay for Life held on our campus. I have also volunteered for the Daffodil Days for The American Cancer Society for 2 years in row.

Employment? I am a full-time mother and student.

Anything else interesting?
— My husband and I are both full-time students, and we have two special-needs children at home. Our son is 11 and he suffered a total system failure as an infant leading to frontal lobe damage. This has caused some severe mental illnesses and he requires a great deal of care.
— My daughter is 5 and she was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. This basically means she has an extremely underdeveloped left side of the heart which could not function. She has endured 3 open-heart surgeries. Her condition is considered fatal, but we are hoping the reconstructions will last for a while. She may require a heart transplant in the future, but there is still very little known about the long-term results of the reconstructive surgeries. Despite these challenges, my husband works full-time, we maintain our GPA, and we both hold officer positions in Phi Theta Kappa.
— We need to move because the high altitude where we live is causing problems for our daughter, so we are looking at additional costs for out-of state tuition as well as moving expenses, so this scholarship would help a great deal.
— I am also a writer with 2 published short stories.

It appears we will find out at the end of this month. I cannot wait any longer! *fingers crossed

Good Luck
Let us know!
Take Care,
Lisa

Best of luck Lisa and Jimbo!!! Hopefully we will all get it!!! :D

Laura

has anyone heard back yet if they have been chosen as a 2011 JKC Transfer scholar? Still waiting…

No, not yet…

My friend was nominated as well, and he is still waiting too. Hopefully they will let us know soon. On the website it says late April, so let’s see :D

I spoke to the foundation and they said that it should be “around the 28th of April” that only the recipients will be notified BY EMAIL. Regardless, they said that if you do not see an email in your inbox by April 31st, then, simply put, you unfortunately are not a recipient. Non recipients are notified in May.

Oh man, if I see an email from the foundation by the end of this month, then I know what it will be about. And then I will scream. Very loudly. I can’t wait any longer!!!

Hello All,

I am also a nominee, haven’t heard anything from the foundation. Here is a little about me.

Where are you from?
*Garfield, New Jersey

Current School?
*PCCC

What schools have you applied to?
*Montclair State University (MSU) & Columbia University

1 choice and why?

*Columbia is my # 1 choice, I applied Early Action and I’m pending to hear from them.
They have a major that blends the two fields that I love (Financial Economics- FE) and is located in the heart of the finance world (NYC). Not to mention, the amazing world of resources that the school has to offer. One of the top research institutions in the world, and exposure to some of the best academic professors in the field…this is why CU is my first choice. Also proximity ,CU as well as MSU, are within a commuting distance.

Accepted anywhere?
*MSU

Intended major?
*FE
Current Earn Credits/GPA?
*3.72 (This is because I have a C+ from a college class I took when I was a Junior in H.S. – I was trying to be proactive and take college courses early on so that I can best prepare for when I went to college, otherwise my GPA would be higher).

Community College EC’s?
*Senator of Student Government Association
*Phi Theta Kappa member
*Vice President of the Business Club
*Student Association Committee member

Volunteer Activities?
*Occasional walks for the cause , avid volunteer at my community shelter home & soup kitchen

Employment?
*I work full time 40-45hrs a week.

Anything else interesting?
*In spite of working fulltime, I attended school full time (12 to 18 credits per semester), volunteered my weekends to peer tutoring /Study groups as part of our PTK academic excellence program. Any time in between classes and work, I am at club meetings or events at school.
Love a hectic schedule and working under pressure. I was also nominated as Who’s Who Among Colleges and Universities. This is my last semester before I graduate, like the many of you.

I just lost my post and had to re-type it. :(

Anyways… nice to see some fellow nominees! And it’s also a relief to know when and how JKCF will notify us. Thanks Jimbo!

Where are you from?
New Haven, CT

Current School?
Gateway Community College

What schools have you applied to?
Amherst College, Connecticut College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Wesleyan University

1 choice and why?

I’ve always had my eye on Wesleyan because of their stellar film school, but it’s a toss-up between Amherst and Wes. Lots of specifics, but both schools focus on undergraduate education, and offer a curriculum that would allow me to explore both of my interests in an intimate, liberal arts setting. And Amherst has the 5 college consortium–the opportunities seem endless. I could talk about these schools for days. But I’m trying not to get my hopes up because they are both very selective.

Accepted anywhere?
Smith College and Mount Holyoke College :D

Intended major?
Behavioral Science (Some Psych/Soc/Anthro mix) and Film Studies

Current Earn Credits/GPA?
4.0 - About 60 credits I think

Community College EC’s?
Phi Theta Kappa - Alpha Xi Theta President (Former VP of Recruitment)
Student Government VP (Former Secretary)
Theater Club President
Finance Committee, among some other committees…

Volunteer Activities?
Most, if not all, are through PTK or the college’s community outreach program. But yes, many!

Employment?
Student Worker at college.
Former Bookseller/Cashier at local Borders. Unfortunately, ours was one of the ones that were shut down.

Anything else interesting?
No. I’m supposed to be working on a paper right now. All the insomnia and anxiety over waiting for college and scholarship notifications has put me in a constant zombie state. I am way over-caffeinated, and a little addicted to College Confidential.

So many beyond-qualified applicants… I’m in awe of all of you!

Good luck! Be sure to come back and let us know if any of you hear anything!

Hello everyone,

Both my wife and myself were selected as nominees for the JKC undergraduate transfer scholarship for our school. Our info is below

Names: Joshua & Kristl Commander

Where are you from?

I’m from Santa Rosa, CA and my wife is from Albuquerque, NM

Current School?

College of the Redwoods, Eureka, CA

What schools have you applied to?

We’ve applied to, and have been accepted to, Humboldt State University.

1 choice and why?

The reason we chose this school even though it is not a particularly selective university is because it enables us to continue the other avenues of education we are pursuing due to its close proximity to home; we are both currently students of Sun Yi’s Academy of Traditional Tae Kwon Do (we’re testing for our black belts this summer) and are volunteers at the Humboldt Wildlife Care Center training to be certified wildlife rehabilitators. HSU is the only university anywhere near either of these establishments; thus, if we were to attend our university of choice (either Oxford or Cambridge), we would have to give up our other pursuits. What’s more, it’s simply not feasible to transport our 15 rescue animals to England at this time.

Accepted anywhere?
Listed above

Intended major?

We’re both English Literature Majors, specializing in British Literature (particularly the Victorian era).

Current Earn Credits/GPA?

I have, I believe, 83 units earned with a 3.89 GPA (I’ll be receiving 2 AA degrees this May); Kristl has, I think, around 75 units with a 3.941 GPA.

Community College EC’s?

We’ve are both Nationally Certified to tutor any level of undergraduate college English and have been tutors at our school’s writing center in the past. We’ve also been columnists for our school’s newspaper, the Old Growth Gazette, have been published in a variety of newspapers, World Watch Magazine, HSU’s Literary Journal (the Toyon), College of the Redwoods Poets & Writers, etc. We rescue, house, and care for abused and neglected domestic animals of all kinds–anything from dogs and cats, to parrots, to chinchillas, to pythons and tarantulas (we are currently caring for 15 animals). We’re part of the Honors Program and have been selected to collaboratively present our research on Melville’s “Bartleby, the Scrivener” at Stanford University on May 7th. We’ve both received modest scholarships from our school on a few occasions.

Volunteer Activities?

Tutoring English, Wildlife Care Center, Tutoring Middle School and Grade School children, coaching t-ball and soccer, distributing informational pamphlets on the environment and veganism, and volunteering our voices to record classical literature and make it available, for free, in the public domain (via Librivox.org).

Employment?

I’m a full time server and Kristl is the principal caretaker of our menagerie.

Anything else interesting?

We were the inspiration, via our mentor, Susan Nordlof, of the conception of the Dickens Universe Scholarship for Undergraduates, which is quite an honor. We’re environmentally active, as well, and are both vegan. We’ve also been part of our Tae Kwon Do demo team, participating in demonstrative events at fairs, schools, etc.

Looking through all of our posts, we’re a pretty impressive bunch, and I sincerely hope each and every one of us are awarded the scholarship! Thank you, so much, for sharing—and Good Luck!

I’ve been trying to see if others were notified yet, and stumbled upon this thread

Where are you from? monterey park, california

Current School? east los angeles college

What schools have you applied to? UC San Diego, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Irvine, Rice University, will apply to Northwestern University

1 choice and why? It was Northwestern or Rice because their applied math is in the engineering department, and I want to do applied math with a focus on engineering.

Accepted anywhere? UCLA, UCIrvine, UC San Diego. the others haven’t informed me yet.

Intended major? Applied mathematics

Current Earn Credits/GPA? I don’t have this info on hand. my gpa is about 3.86-3.87, I have around 100 credits

Community College EC’s? I am in a club called MESA where I volunteer tutored.

Volunteer Activities? I played piano for my church. I also tutor anyone who asks me for help for free outside of any organizations. Usually no one notices, but a math teacher found out I was helping a dyslexic student in class and now ends up writing about it on my letters of rec. I’m sure he wrote it on the one submitted for this app.

Employment? Last summer I did research in materials science at CalTech. Unfortunately, I got my current job and future summer research job just after finishing the Cooke app.

Anything else interesting? I’m a recovering alcoholic (as well as the daughter of a single alcoholic mother) and have over 4 years of sobriety. I’m very active in AA and have spoken at countless meetings as well as at a detox facility. I also can play the guitar and saxophone. Additionally, I went to culinary school before enrolling in community college. I’ve presented my research at 3 symposiums: one at caltech, one CSU biotech conference where I was the only community college student, and the American Chemical Society’s national meeting.

I’m incredibly nervous. After reading your answers, I’m stressing!

I have been trying to see who got the scholarship too. Hopefully we all get it.

Current School? Broward College

What schools have you applied to? Brown University, Carleton College, Columbia University, Florida State University, will apply to Northwestern University

1 choice and why? It was Brown or Columbia, but now it is Brown and Carleton. Brown, cause it has my program, Columbia just cos. But now Carleton is now my second choice because it has a great environment. It is not just focused on getting the best grades but a fun and inviting environment as a whole.

Accepted anywhere? FIU, FAU. Haven’t heard from the rest.

Intended major? History and Journalism

Current Earn Credits/GPA? 48 credits (60 this semester). 4.0

Community College EC’s? The African Student Union & the Honors Student Committee.

Volunteer Activities? Did a fundraiser for Sudan

Employment? Yes. Work at student life.

Anything else interesting? Came from Nigeria. Graduated at the age of 15. Overcame a period of violent abuse at boarding school. Still recovering.

But we’ll all be fine. Whether we get it or not, we are still reaching for the stars!

Where are you from? Seattle
Current School? South Seattle Community College
What schools have you applied to? University of Washington

1 choice and why? Three year scholarship ($7000/year)

Current Earn Credits/GPA? 3.93
Community College EC’s? Phi Theta Kappa and Founder and President of Business Club

Anything else interesting? Interesting in coordinating financing between international solar companies and small start ups. All-Washington Academic, All-USA Coca-Cola Gold Scholar, Foundation Scholarship, Boeing-Adopt-A-Student Scholarship, and Stan Chu Writing Award runner up.

Really interested in finding out what you guys wrote about for the current event portion of the essays.

Good luck everyone, I am humbled to be apart of this group. I was so impressed with everyone’s accomplishments, wish I could meet you all and find out how you do it!

Dana

I know the graduate scholars have been notified today because I know someone who received it. This makes me more nervous because I do not know if they released the other awards too, or just the graduate scholars. I am going crazy waiting for this because I have not secured enough funding for me to be able to attend the colleges I have been accepted to.

I am waiting too… Have anyone got the notification?

OMG!!! This agony is horrible!!! My heart drops every time I get an email!!! Aaaaaahhhhhhh!!!

Well, I am glad there is a good number of us in this forum.

Dana, I wrote about globalization (free trade agreements, outsourcing, etc.), what about you?

Good luck everyone!!!

No, Nhhn… I do not think we have any responses yet… :(
