My son is btw UD and JMU too with scholarships and Honors College for both. His major is CS. Just wondering for those deciding btw these two choices (or anyone who already decided) what’s swaying your student one way or the other…

Congratulations to your son! My daughter is also still considering both schools/Honors programs (as well as a couple others). Our 2 cents: both have solid academic reputations, both great campuses, great school spirit, good sports, nice surrounding college town. She thought both schools felt “friendly” when we visited. We do really like how Delaware’s Honors College is structured with the Munson Fellows acting as “big brother/big sister” mentors to the incoming students. She also got a sizable Merit scholarship from UD so we have to figure that in as we are OOS for both schools. Your son has excellent choices and will end up at a great school either way!

Thanks so much and congratulations to your daughter too! We’re also OOS for both schools. I agree that the Munson Fellows seem like a great aspect of the UD Honors College. UD gave him the Trustee Scholarship and JMU’s scholarship is equal to the cost of full in state tuition and fees. It does make JMU significantly less because my son will also have a differential engineering fee at UD. However at UD, his major is direct admit (unlike JMU) and UD is significantly closer to home (which he prefers) so those are big factors to consider too…

If you have been awarded merit, do you mind sharing what it is? My DS was accepted into honors but no merit so far. I’m kind of surprised since he is pretty high stats and has received merit almost everywhere else. We are OOS. Just trying to understand this all as I have another DS who will be going through this next year.

My son applied for the Second Century Scholarship and had to submit an application and an essay. We found out that he was one of the chosen recipients around the end of January. He was accepted to the Honors College too but that’s not the basis for his merit award. Hope that helps!

For whatever it’s worth my D got $15k from Udel and nothing from JMU.

For some perspective on this, less than 40% of UD’s enrollment is DE residents (7269 vs 11438 OOS) compared to JMU’s enrollment which is 78% Virginians and 22% out of state. Delaware wants and needs the OOS kids more and offers them more merit.

So, when looking at just tuition, room, board and the annual fee, Delaware is about $9,000 more than JMU before your daughter’s merit, but Delaware is about $6,000 less after merit?

I think $24,000 over 4 years is something that deserves real consideration, obviously.

We just appealed U Del’s merit. Our daughter got nothing, so it makes about a $10,000 delta between U Del and JMU(if she gets in🤞), that alone would be hard to resist!

Yes my daughter is likely attending April 4. Would love to hear how it goes!

We had a wonderful time at choices. We learned so much about the school and let me just say their food is out of this world. You will learn a great deal of information at Choice. Be prepared for a lot of walking. They have shuttle buses to help with the amount of walking. My son walked away with a feeling of excitement and after being waitlisted from VT has decided to make this his home. Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions.

Did they have informational sessions on each major or anything like that?

Thank you! My son really loved it when we visited in January. We chose to do Choices in April so we could see the campus in spring. I appreciate you sharing with us!

Yes, they did. They had open houses for majors as well as specific programs.
