Jmu or va tech!

Hello! I'm a white male In-State Virginia..
Briefly, I applied to schools with a 4.22 (weighted) GPA and 1800 SAT; Took 8 AP Courses in High School.

I've already gotten Accepted to JMU through Early Action (still waiting to hear back from JMU honors college) I applied regular to Virginia Tech and feel pretty confident of getting accepted there as well. I'm already anticipating the dilemma of likely having to decide between the two.
My plan is to hopefully double major in Sports Communications, my dream job is to work at espn, and Chemistry/Biochemistry (either/or). I realize that JMU and VA TECH ACADEMICALLY are almost identical and I certainly have pro's and con's on both sides of the argument which is why I feel like it will be a difficult decision.

Really would love some feedback and opinions on what would be a more successful and useful path down the road. Please try to keep it as unbiased as possible as i realize that people who attend either school will say their school is better. Not trying to start an argument by any means.

Also applied to UMD-College Park (early), Wake Forest, and Villanova, though instate cost is pretty important.

Thank you for your time and patience! I truly appreciate it.

JMU 10char

Have you visited both of them? If you gain admittance to VT and are faced with your decision, I would highly suggest visiting each to see which one you like the most in terms of the campus, etc. I would also suggest possibly sitting in on a class in the business school and/or science depts. and/or making an appointment to talk to one of the professors in these departments. Sometimes you can really gain insight into a school if you take it a step further and move past the routine tours and talks.

They are both great options for you given what you want to possibly go into. I wouldn’t say for those majors one school is superior over the other. In our area of Virginia, Tech is seen as a bit harder to get into for most students and is perceived to have a bit of an edge overall academically. (that perception may vary though depending on who you talk to)

Best of luck to you and I hope you have to make this decision! It will be one of those “win/win” ones, so that is a good thing! :)

Thank you! I’ve had siblings go to JMU so i’ve been there a lot. I plan to take a trip to TECH in the next few months though all i’ve heard is that its large ha.

It’s definitely a tough decision btw. the two. If you get into JMU Honors, I may lean that direction. You have happy students at both schools, solid academics at both schools (approachable profs), and both are well respected. We are also instate and my son has lots of friends that have headed to VT & JMU. Would definitely go visit Virginia Tech on a weekday over the next month (maybe go on a Friday for a tour/info session then stay over night so that you can see the school on a Sat. too?). I think VT may have the slight edge (harder to get accepted/higher SAT score avg of accepted students). However, JMU honors would allow you to have specialized housing (can be an issue at JMU), and more course/research opportunities…tough call if you get into JMU honors. Good luck!

Which would give you the most opportunities to publish in the newspaper and/or do sports broadcasting?

@jkiwmom yea getting into jmu honors would def push me towards jmu and a visit is def a must for vtech

@dudedad thats the question im wondering as well…would it be harder to get involved in that kind of stuff at tech because its such a large school?

WizKid, I may be wrong, but I think you will be surprised at the size factor of VT once you visit the campus. I thought it would be big, too, and was hesitant at first when my s wanted to apply there. It is a large university, don’t get me wrong, but because of the way it is laid out, with the two sides-academic side and student dorm side- separated by the drillfield, it really is easy to navigate (and I am saying this as a supremely direction challenged person! :)) Being out in the country doesn’t hurt either. We visited UGA and Clemson, too, both as big as Tech and afterward I came away thinking “those are some big schools”. Everyone feels differently though so you need to go see.

Great point by dudedad. Tech has a really super campus paper, The Collegiate Times. My d has looked at it occasionally to see more about what is going on there. Here is a link

Again good luck! Enjoy the rest of your senior year, too!

Good post by K@K Mom with lots of info. I don’t believe VT’s size would work against you WizKid, rather it should help. I’d guess the paper publishes five days a week, so plenty of opportunity there. Not sure about JMU either. There is a website that has virtually all college newpapers listed every day - haven’t visisted it in a while.
