Hey, everybody! So, I just recently got accepted and was wondering if there are jobs offered for freshman at UC Davis. Strangely, I didn’t get work-study even though I am low-income. The stressful part is that I would like to come to UC Davis, but the financial aspect of it has been pushing me back.

So,can anybody advise me on what types of freshman jobs are available at UC Davis and do they really help in covering most aspects of financial aid? The thing is that my family is not a huge fan of loans and feel that I should go to a cal state school despite being accepted into UC Davis, UCSD and other great private colleges.

Disclaimer: I am a mom with a child interested in attending Davis this fall.

I read in previous threads here on CC that they do not offer “work study” to freshman.

If you get work study after freshman year then that income would not count as income for that taxable year’s tax return. If you work off-campus or in a campus non-work study position, then that income would count towards your income that taxable year. It probably would not hurt you too much since you are already low income, but student income is counted more heavily on the FAFSA, so you want to keep your income down under $6000 annually or so if possible.

Unfortunately, they don’t offer work study to first year students, whether you are a freshmen or incoming transfer student. I was a transfer student and didn’t get offered work study until my second year at UC Davis, and there have been others on CC who also said that they didn’t get offered work study either until their second year (either as sophomores or, if transfer students, their 2nd year at UCD).

I’m very sure they do offer work study to freshman. Also, it’s not hard to get a campus job, I got one two or three weeks in because I applied before school started.

@ niklas: you were lucky then. Last year and the year before, I got offered work study jobs and spent summer applying for the ones that I qualified for and didn’t get an interview for any of them.

To clarify, normal campus jobs are probably much more competitive but they are available. I got a job working IT at a lab due to prior computer experience.
