My sister got great news today...she received her acceptance to W & L, and the Johnson Scholarship in the mail today!! She is still waiting to hear from a few places, but what a great option this is. And she really enjoyed her visit there much more than she thought she would. W & L is now much, much higher on her list of final possibilities. She has some tough decisions to make next month...

Same for my son. He isn’t sure he will attend, but this award makes an already very attractive school even more so. He really liked WLU on his Johnson visit–mich more than he thought he would Wonderful news that he received the scholarship. We are very grateful.

Congratulations to your sister and son! My son also finalist but won’t hear news either way until 3/23 as he’s also a finalist in a regional scholarship. It doesn’t make sense to me that they don’t let him know the Johnson decision either way…but it is what it is. Keeping fingers crossed!

Congrats and good luck ^, just received the scholarship notification yesterday morning, was so excited! Still want to hear back from my other schools but I have a feeling I will be in Lexington come this September! Hi to all those reading who met me during Johnson’s weekend, and I wish everyone the best!

Danigirl, my daughter said she met you at dinner! She received her Johnson award letter yesterday and she is very excited. She loved W&L and is planning to accept. We are very, very grateful. What a wonderful gift from Mr. Johnson!!!

Sciencewoman, is your daughter the one with the beautiful red hair (the one she claims she grew herself?) LOL if she is, she will get the joke =) Tell her congratulations for me!

Got the Johnson Not sure if I’ll go but it’s definitely near the top of my list!

The mail takes forever. We havent heard yet.

That would be her, Danigirl. I will pass on your response. That hair color is real…you can’t lie at W&L! Congratulations to you, too!

My daugther received the Johnson letter today as well. She is very excited to be offered a slot.

She loved the spending time up in Lexington and meeting the other canidates.

My son received his acceptance today, but no scholarship. WLU was his first choice, but he will probably end up at one of his other schools that offered large scholarships. Congratulations to all the recipients!

Does anyone know of a good way of networking with the other finalists? I met several interesting people at the competition and I can’t easily find them now. I wish I had a list with contact info or at least names to refresh my memory.

It appears that the greek system plays a large part in the social scene at W&L. And I understand that the university owns the frat and sorority properties. If a Johnson Scholarship recipient wanted to live in a frat or sorority house, could the room and board allowance from the scholarship be applied toward the frat house charge for room and board?

I’m not sure. I was wondering the same thing. Frat houses and off campus housing seem like slightly hazy issues, but W&L is trying to cover the estimated living cost. If you go beyond the minimal amount, it would be difficult for W&L to justify paying less than that amount. It seems to me that the scholarship is just an award to cover pretty much all of your basic expenses; I doubt it would ever drop significantly. It might not cover the entire extra cost of a frat or off campus house, but it would not leave much expense. That sort of tricky reassessment isn’t really in the spirit of a merit scholarship.

You basically receive the amount of money you were promised and you can use it however you want. The cost of Greek housing is the same as Gilliam so it shouldn’t be much of an issue and many people save money when they go off campus. I had similar questions last year so feel free to ask me questions. I am not active here often but you can email me at jangha15@mail.wlu.edu for any questions regarding W&L or the Johnson Scholarship and I will try to reply in haste.

My child is a Johnson Scholar, Class of 2013. Not only does the scholarship pay for tuition, room, board (on and off-campus and Greek), fees and books, there’s more than enough to cover everything else, including expenses for any campus events such as Fancy Dress Ball or Mock Convention; T-shirts from the bookstore, you name it. All Johnson Scholars have to do is swipe their ID cards in those instances. If they need actual spending money, they go to the business office and request a check (that can take a couple of weeks because they write checks on a certain schedule, from what I understand). A Scholar who is frugal can have thousands of dollars left in their account at the end of every school year – and may keep it all. A Scholar who likes to spend money can go through it all every year. The only down side is having to pay taxes each year on part of the scholarship. This year, about $15,000 of it was considered taxable. But that’s a small price to pay for the education my Scholar is getting and the friendships that I’m sure will last a lifetime.

@2013wlumom. I don’t think that’s true for everyone. My daughter’s Johnson Scholar offer is just for tuition and room/board. She is not receiving anything for books, travel, or extra expenses. Her award included a $2000 work study and an optional $3600 federal loan. Otherwise, we don’t qualify for any financial aid, so we very grateful for the Johnson!! I think you have to qualify for aid to get the “extra” spending money that makes the package equal to the full cost of attendance. We’re expecting to spend a few thousand each year on books, travel expenses, spending money, probable sorority dues, etc., and will probably skip the loan.
