Just wondering...

Hello! I'm new around here...smiles sheepishly, but I was just wondering...is there anyone on here who is or has heard/known of someone who recieved a likely letter but didn't get in? As previously stated, the letter
-does- end on an anti-climatic tone. Just curious.

Duckie, it's rare. If your mid-year report shows slipping grades, you'd have something to worry about.

So, if your grades do slip, are you automatically placed in the REJECT pile? My counselor said something to that effect...

You can't define slip for everyone. We'll review your mid-years and if we see a dramatic change, we may change our decision.

Similarly, if you are admitted and your final transcript arrives with bad grades on it, we may rescind your offer.

Admission is offered on the condition that you complete you high school career on the same path we saw when we admitted you.

theduckie, your counselor also doesn't want you slacking off during your last semester of high school either :)

If your grades do slip, is there anything you can do to help your case? My Physics AP/Calculus BC classes were incredibly hard this term, but I'm sure my grades will be back to normal by the end of the school year...maybe my GC could submit an extra letter of recommendation?
Haha, yeah, sv3a, my GC is a funny little man. He doesn't like slackers. Then again, I wasn't slacking!! will UVA understand this?

Since UVA takes a holistic approach to admissions, I do think that the school will understand if an explanation is submitted..... You weren't slacking; some courses are harder than others with teachers that are demanding and may or may not be the best in that particular field of interest... That's why schools don't look at grades alone. They try to get a composite picture of the student. Good luck!

Well, I guess that's what I will do then. I really want to go to UVA! It's my first choice and if I don't get in I'll be forced to go to Tech :(

oh no i hate tech, i hope you get in!!

i'm just curious...what's the "likely letter"? my kid is graduating UVA(out of state) this May, and she never received such a letter. yeah, and UVAs HATE VTs!!! :)

Tech is also a good school. I personally would like to go to UVA over Tech if the choice does come to that, all things being equal. But I am glad we have various quality institutions in Va. In some states these are options people would kill to have. UVA and Tech both fill different niches, but neither are bad schools. Don't feel you are "forced" to go to Tech. Also there is always the option of transferring. This is why it is important to have safeties that you wouldn't mind attending. If you got a likely letter you're in good shape for UVA if the drop in grades isn't horrible (I mean I don't know if you're talking about failing - a B or C instead of an A or B is different) and you expect you can bring it up.

I know plenty of people at UVa with friends at Tech and vice versa, that have visited each other and stayed on either campus. Maybe some kids at UVa hate people at Tech but this is not the case for everyone.

I have to agree with Princedog on this one.

We are truly blessed in virginia to have 3 great public schools all with fairly different specialties. Most states don't even have one great public school.

UVa and Tech also both have great "good 'ol boys" networks anywhere on the east coast. You will have a serious leg up on the competition around here going to these schools.

Not so much. VT has very little recruiting in banking/consulting/business compared to UVA, although UVA doesn't have quite the same network as, say, Wharton or Princeton.

It's not so much that Tech is a "horrible school" as I don't want to go there...everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE at my school gets in to Tech, and it doesn't have as much of the liberal arts enviroment as UVA does because Tech is, well, a TECH school. Besides, the UVA campus is prettier. xD Princedog, I'm talking about dropping down to like a C in Physics Ap but a B in calc, and A's in all my other classes
