Kelley DA Finance Major...What courses should I take for first semester?

Here is the deal:

-Kelley Direct Admit
-Hutton Honors College
-Intended Finance Major with International Business co-major
-Intended Minor in French (apparently I can do a field specialization and attain a minor this way??? I am looking for clarification on this)
-Intention to Study Abroad
-Intention to do business honors program
-Intention to join Investment Banking Workshop

I have been hearing there is a lot of bad advising over at IU and at Kelley, so I wanted to get some help from some of the really informed posters on CC. What courses should I take for my first semester? Also, I know there is a lot in that list up there, and I am certain that as go through my years, I will realize which of those intentions take priority, but for planning purposes, I figured I would list my goals/ ambitons. Thanks to any one who can help!

There have been several threads lately that have addressed freshman scheduling at Kelley so you can digest those to figure out your specific schedule.

As a DA who wants to get into Business Honors, you need to focus on getting great grades and whittling down the list of I-Core prerequisites. Competition is stiff. If you check out the class grade distributions, it is often true that the honors sections grade higher, so take advantage of your ability to register for those classes. You also need to participate in some leadership activity in a meaningful way.

A French minor is definitely a possibility.

Also, you won’t be able to study abroad until you have completed I-Core, so generally, not until the spring of your junior year. This prohibition does not apply to the courses which include a week to 10 days of travel that Kelley offers at times.

I think the advising that DAs receive from Kelley is usually pretty good.

What are the honors section??

If you pull up the IU Course Browser, you will see the honors sections listed. For example,

BUS-A 202 INTRO TO MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING
BUS-A 207 INTRO TO MANAGRL ACCT-HONORS

A 207 is the honors version of Intro to Managerial Accounting.

Here is the list of honors courses for business majors:

[Program Requirements: Business Honors Program: Academics: Undergraduate Program: Kelley School of Business: Indiana University Bloomington](<a href=“Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley”>Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley)

Note that not all of these classes are in the business department, but some are also honors versions of classes that are offered in other departments (for example, in the Mathematics Department or in the Economics Department) that are required for graduation from the business school.

For your freshman year, you should plan to probably take the following courses from this group:

Fall Semester:

BUS-G 101 Business in the Information Age
BUS-K 204 Honors The Computer in Business
BUS-X 106 Honors Business Presentations
MATH-S 118 Honors Finite Mathematics

Spring Semester:
BUS-X 205 Honors Business Communications
BUS-X 202 Technology (Honors)

Then adding in the other courses you should take:

Fall Semester:

BUS-G 101 Business in the Information Age
BUS-K 204 Honors The Computer in Business
BUS-X 106 Honors Business Presentations
MATH-S 118 Honors Finite Mathematics
BUS A-100 Basic Accounting (only a one unit class, but very tough) (take it first 8 weeks–and drop if you need to and retake during the second 8 weeks)
plus one other course in which you can get a good grade and/or a French course–or else just take 13 units of credit, which is probably the best choice (and what I would do) since you are already taking a very tough accounting course and four honors courses.

Spring Semester:
BUS-X 205 Honors Business Communications
BUS-X 202 Technology (Honors)
MATH-M 119 Survey of Calculus I
ENGL-W 131 English Composition
One other course that is one you can use towards your French minor or a general education requirement course

I suggest you leave the two tough accounting courses and the two tough economics courses for your junior year, or consider taking the econ ones (which transfer easier than the accounting ones) during the summer at a local community college near your hometown. Also, you can’t take the basic legal course until you are a sophomore (this is a Kelley rule). Also, you should sign up for BUS X220 as soon as possible, but my guess is that you won’t be able to get into this course until your sophomore year.

In your sophomore year, you should concentrate on finishing up your other I-Core prerequisites, plus some other general education or French courses. Then in your junior year, first semester take honors I-core, and in second semester do your semester abroad. In your senior year, take your major courses and start interviewing for jobs or make your applications to graduate schools.

Oh, and the Investment Banking workshop is during the summer between your sophomore and junior years–but you have to apply by the end of the first year or so.

I hope this helps–and anyone who wants to comment and make suggestions on what I’ve said here, please do so.

Let me modify what I wrote above very slightly:

Take the following instead of what I listed above:

Fall Semester:

ENGL-W 131 English Composition
BUS-K 204 Honors The Computer in Business
BUS-X 106 Honors Business Presentations
MATH-S 118 Honors Finite Mathematics
BUS A-100 Basic Accounting (only a one unit class, but very tough) (take it first 8 weeks–and drop if you need to and retake during the second 8 weeks)
plus one other course in which you can get a good grade and/or a French course–or else just take 13 units of credit, which is probably the best choice (and what I would do) since you are already taking a very tough accounting course and four honors courses.

Spring Semester:

BUS-A 205 Financial Accounting - Honors
BUS-X 205 Honors Business Communications
BUS-X 202 Technology (Honors)
MATH-M 119 Survey of Calculus I
One other course that is one you can use towards your French minor or a general education requirement course

The reason for the change is because you won’t need BUS G101 since you are already admitted to Kelley, and you will need to start taking your accounting courses as soon as possible–since you are a Finance major. And Financial Accounting is the only course that is offered as an honors course in the Spring semester–and you are required to take the BUS A100 course before taking it. (So, I moved the English composition course to the first (Fall) semester for you.)

For others reading this who want to get into Kelley, but are not direct admits, you will need to take the schedule I suggested in the post above (but take the non-honors version instead of the honors versions), and not take what I’m suggesting here for JaradW.

Also, be aware that Kelley offers special one-on-one sessions on public speaking and writing, and the university (and Kelley) have tutoring by upper-division students available for free for lower-division students for almost every course. And I think their rule is that only students who have received an “A” in a class is allowed to tutor that class for other students.

JaradW, the classes you take depend alot on how many AP or other types of college credits you have before you get to IU. For instance, if you don’t have any at all, there is almost no chance you will get into A205 in Spring 2010. My son got one of the last seats off the waitlist in late December for Spring 2009 and he had 13 credits coming in. Direct admits are now a dime a dozen at IU. Until beginning in Fall 2009, direct admits were eligible to take A207 Managerial Accounting. Now you have to be in Hutton or Mitte to sign up for this class. Direct admits alone can’t sign up for it anymore. I wouldn’t be surprised if they make the same rule for A205 soon.

Also, if you are trying to get into Mitte, you might want to skip the honors accounting classes your freshman year. The competition in A205 is brutal, with Wells, Kelley, Cox and presidential scholars scholars galore. The class is graded on a curve, with 1/6th of the class getting each of the six grades between B- and A+ If you finish in the middle of the pack among these students you will get a B+, and this could hurt your chances of getting into Mitte. A lot of students currently in A205 are in Mitte and are also in their second year at IU, which means they steered clear of A205 until after they got into Mitte. A205 this semester is full of Kelley Scholars who are in their first year at IU, but they are not risking anything with a poor grade because Kelley Scholars automatically make it into Mitte.

Also, since you are in Hutton, you should sign up for a Hutton distribution option courses H203 or H204 your first semester, and probably one your second semester, too. Check the grade distribution report and you will see that these courses often average 3.8 and above, even though the content is not difficult. I just checked and four sections from last fall were 3.84 or higher, with two sections where every student got an A.

Also, as a general rule, I would not take any two of the following classes in the same semester. They require a lot of group work, and you will have a very hard time juggling meetings if you take two of them the same semester. I would take them in the order listed below, beginning with Fall 2009. Take the honors versions of the technology courses because the opportunities for extra credit make getting A’s pretty likely, although you will have to work hard to get them. The business presentation class you should take for honors credit or take in a section of direct admits only, because about one-third of your grade will be judged on group presentations, and you want to be sure to take the class with people who will work hard. Take the technology class in successive semesters so that you won’t forget everything you learned in K204 by the time you take X202.

BUS-X 106 Honors Business Presentations- Fall 2009
BUS-K 204 Honors The Computer in Business - Spring 2010
BUS-X 202 Technology (Honors) - Fall 2010
BUS-X 205 Honors Business Communications - Spring 2011

If I could do it again, this is how I would have set up my first semester:

BUS-K 201
BUS-A 100 (first eight weeks)
BUS-X 220 (second eight weeks)

Two from the following list:
MATH-M 119
MATH-M 118
ENG-W 131
ECON-E 201
BUS-X 104 or CMCL-C 121 (CMCL-C 121 is easier)
BUS-G 202
BUS-L 201

And then one easy gen ed class (that fulfills the 27 hour req).

This set up leaves you with a lot of options (you will be getting the pre reqs out of the way first).

why would you take so many honors courses? I mean it’s not like it’s weighted or anything… just harder…

Also are all DAs allowed to take any honors courses regardless of their status as an business honors student?

There two types of “honors” classes, Hutton and Kelley.

The Kelley classes at the one and two hundred level are open to direct admits to Kelley. SAT needed is 1270 and then gpa requirement to be a direct admit to Kelley.

Hutton Honors College classes can only be taken by people in Hutton. SAT needed to get accepted to Hutton is probably about 1350, class rank probably top 5%. So it is tougher to get into Hutton. Hutton students can get into Hutton honors classes and Kelley honors classes like K204, A205, A207. But Kelley direct admits can’t take Hutton honors classes unless they are ALSO in the Hutton Honors College.

The honors classes aren’t necessarily harder than the non-honors. In Kelley, they are more work, but you get rewarded for the work with high grades if you do all the available extra credit. Hutton Honors College course tend to be pretty easy and give high grades. Kind of a paradox, but that’s the way it is. Use the Hutton Honors College courses to fulfill distribution option requirements.

bthompl mentions trying to get into mitte, could you please explain what is mitte?

Mitte wen’t bankrupt (or at least that’s the rumor at Kelley), so they renamed their honors program the Business Honors Program. You apply the spring of your freshman year. The application involves sending in a professional resume (get it reviewed at the career services office before you send it in), writing a short essay on a predetermined topic, sending in two letters of recommendation, and having a minimum of a 3.7 GPA to apply (they look at the GPA after second semester). You must also be actively involved in at least one club at IU. You are notified of being admitted/rejected in July.

A sincere thanks to calcruzer and bthomp1 and everyone else who chimed in!!!

This is a super helpful thread. Thanks so much. One more question: D is taking the optional Calculus exam during Orientation this summer. What’s the purpose of that exam? Depending on how she does on the test, what changes (if anything) on the i-Core prereq list? What about Calc AB AP scores. Does that make a difference?

If she passes the calc test at orientation, she gets 4 credits for M211. It is four free credits and one less i core pre req needed. I took it before I got the results of my ap test back; aced the orientation test, bombed the AP test.

Based on how she felt about the AP Calc test yesterday, she likely bombed it too! So fingers crossed the orientation test goes well. Thanks for answering the question. Once these darned AP tests are finished she will be here ■■■■■■■■ this site for your good advice herself!
