Kelley Direct/Standard Admit Questions

Hey Everyone,

I was hoping that someone could answer a few of my questions:

1). Do I apply to Kelley even If I am not qualified for direct admission? Would this lead me to University Division?

2). Does applying shortly after the application becomes available actually help my chances? I would try to complete my app with in the first few days it comes out.

3). What is the appeal process? If I were to appeal and not win would I lose my chance at University Division? What is the likely hood of being successful?

4). How hard is it actually to be admitted into Kelley standard admission? If the average pre-business student were took easier pre req courses and give it 100%, do you think they would have a decent shot at being admitted?

5). If the answer to my first question 1 is a yes, would applying to Kelley affect my chances at getting into IU? As in would I have a better shot applying to a different College?

I’m not 100% certain of my answers, and things may have changed since my daughter applied 3 years ago.

  1. Yes, apply to Kelley even if you are not qualified for direct admission. You will be University Division Pre-Business, and you will be assigned an advisor who handles students going for Kelley standard admission.
  2. No, I don’t think applying very early helps your chances. The advantage of applying early is hearing back early and knowing where you stand. Just make sure your application is 100% complete by Nov 1 to qualify for automatic or selective scholarships.
  3. There is no risk of petitioning for direct admit. You will not lose your chance at University Division if your petition is denied. I am not familiar with the petition application, so I don’t know what is involved. From what I have heard, it is unlikely your petition will be approved unless you already meet one of the two criteria for direct admission - either test score or GPA. So say your meet the SAT/ACT score requirement but you’re just short of the required GPA, then you have a chance. Otherwise, not likely, but it still doesn’t hurt to try!
  4. I don’t know the statistics for standard admission. I saw someone on another thread say about 50% of those who apply for Kelley standard admission get in. I don’t know if that is accurate. The classes you will have to take before applying for standard admit are not easy, they definitely take effort. But if you apply yourself and manage your time well, you can do it! I would recommend staying away from Finite Math, and keeping your course load as light as possible so you can concentrate on the pre-reqs for Kelley standard admission.
  5. No, you won’t have a better shot applying to a different college at IU. If your ultimate goal is Kelley, apply for Kelley.

Awesome! Thanks for the input!
