Kelley Frosh Schedule & AP Credits

I am going to be a senior in high school this year and I had a couple of questions about Kelley. On the site I noticed that they changed the AP Credits and now accept all 3's as well. The main change is that 3's count as "undestributed" credits. There are the 15 I-core prerecs and then 27 general credits, so if I were to get a 3 on an AP test does that just count towards the generals?

My other question is does Kelley require a year of language or not?

I am interested in Finance and Accounting as a possible double major but I am also interested in minoring in Sports Management through HPER. Would I be able to start taking credits for Sports M. using the 27 general credits? I didn't know if it was my choice or if I had requirements as a freshman. I will probably be a DA to Kelley freshman year assuming they superscore the act. Thanks for the help!

It looks like there is no longer a 27 credit hour core now, but 62 credit general education requirement is still in place. This means you will have more flexibility to get a minor, since the 27 credit hour core has essentially been reduced to 18 credits (subtract the two S&H’s that E201 and E202 now meet for the requirement; and now there is only one “natural sciences” class that you need). This will make it easier to get a minor in a school other than COAS, such as a minor in sports marketing in HPER.

Regarding AP credit, undistributed credited will count toward the 62 credit gen ed requirement, but only that, since that credit is not for a specific COAS course.

I don’t think many Kelley students ever minored in sports management lately, because it requires 18 credits in HPER, and of course, none of those credits helped with the old 27 credit hour core. But since the old 27 hour core is more like 18 now, then, yes, it should be easier to get the sports management minor, which requires 21 credits (A201 fulfills three of those)

Also, you might want to take the ACT again, in case Kelley raises the ACT minimum for direct admits to 30. Not saying they will raise it, but it could happen.

Kelley has not had a foreign language requirement. It may have changed for incoming freshmen, but I doubt it. It has the international dimension requirement, which can be satisfied taking COAS courses that double count for, say, A&H requirements and the International Dimension. A lot of S&H courses double-counted in the past, but why take the ones that double counted now if the S&H requirement is already met by Econ 201 and Econ 202.

Thank you that really helps out, I had a couple other general questions for you bthomp1 that I sent in a private message.

I do not think that the kelley requirements would change because online you can see what the requirements are for 2011 and 2012 and they are both the same with a 29 ACT so should I be fine? I’m taking the ACT again anyway but just curious.

Also for AP credit’s if I were to receive a 4 or 5 they count for specific courses so would that benefit me more than just generals in Kelley or is there so much flexibility that it wouldn’t matter?

Another question I had is if I came into Kelley as a DA and had a couple of credits due to AP’s, would I be taking many business classes my first year or are there too many generals to get done? Really appreciate your advice!

It’s better if the credit is for specific classes that meet your school’s requirements. But gen ed credit is still good and means you probably won’t have to take as many classes. Your schedule first year will be based in part on your ap credit and orientation tests scores, especially if you test high into a foreign language.

All of these classes you need in Kelley also count for gen ed, so you will be taking lots of gen ed no matter what you come in with.

ENG-W 131 (3 cr.)
BUS-X 104 (3 cr.)
BUS-X 204 (3 cr.)
MATH-M 118 (3 cr.)
MATH-M 119 (3 cr.)
ECON-E 201 (3 cr.)
BUS-G 202 (2 cr.)
ECON-E 370 (3 cr.)
BUS-L 201 (3 cr.)
BUS-X 220 (2 cr.)
ECON-E 202 (3 cr.)

Ok that is very helpful. So those business classes you list above are considered general credits? Basically I am trying to get rid of as many english or science credits as I can as I’d love to just focus on business. Could you go into more detail about the orientation tests? I have hear about those before in general at Universities but how does it work at IU and is it easy to test out of subjects? Thanks again!

Yeah, your freshman year you’ll likely take at least two business classes each semester. The orientation tests are really placement. Math is easy, but it only places you. You can’t get credit unless you do some type of AP math. With that being said, look through a bunch of bthomp’s old posts, and wait for Kelley to update their degree requirements, and you should have a good idea of what types of classes you’ll take.

As a soon to be senior, I encourage you to look into other schools and visit as many as possible. I never really thought IU would be my future home until an admissions officer came to my school in October of my senior year. I quickly applied and visited in November, and here I am attending this fall. Enjoy senior year as much as possible; it goes by way too fast. Best of luck.

beardch thank you for the advice! I for sure have not settled on IU yet but Kelley remains one of my top options. It is good to hear that I should have a couple of business classes freshman year as I want to take as many as possible. Any other comments would be appreciated.

Bthomp1 as far as generals, where can I find a list of possible classes that fulfill Kelley requirements? I appreciated the link to the Sports management minor and the possible classes but I wanted a list for the 62 generals. If you have any other information about freshman classes I would appreciate it greatly, I have already looked through some of the other posts and those have helped as well.

One other question I have is do you recommend the Kelley LLC? Are there any benefits to it? I think I would want to live in the northwest neighborhood so where is the LLC usually located? Again I greatly appreciate your advice. Any others are free to comment!

bump…bthomp I would greatly appreciate you answering my questions above as I emailed IU but haven’t gotten a response in almost a week. Thanks, any other opinons/information are welcome to my questions about the gen ed credits and possible classes/required classes one has to take. Refer to post 8. Thanks

This site discusses the new gen ed requirements and has lists of classes. It is supposed to apply to “All undergraduate students who matriculate as degree-seeking students at IU Bloomington in or after first summer session 2011 will be required to complete the campus-wide GenEd program prior to graduation with a baccalaureate degree.”

These requirements represent a massive change to the Kelley gen ed requirements compared to the former requirements, if they apply to Kelley, which they seem to. The new requirements really water down the breadth of general education required for Kelley students. But they will make it much easier to get minors in all COAS subject areas, including foreign languages and economics, assuming the new requirements apply to Kelley. Kelley has not updated their website regarding the new gen ed requirements, so who knows for certain.

I don’t know anything about Kelley LLC, but there are many threads here about it.

Good luck!

Thank you again Bthomp for your valuable knowledge and information. I will look into some of the classes and hopefully IU responds to my email or I will try again. Once question I have is if I got a 3 on the AP human geography class, the credit is undistributed, but is in the department of geog. So for my AP test will that count for 3 credits towards the natural and mathematical sciences? I am just curious as to how much money the AP HG test will save me and where that credit is put towards. Thanks again.

Undistributed credit will count toward your total credits at IU. A&H, S&H, and N&M credit is granted only for the specific courses on the lists.

Most departments have courses that cover more than one of these areas. Geography has mostly N&M courses, but also some S&H classes.

It is undistributed. That means it will not count for the breadth of inquiry N&M. That AP score of 3 will not count for any specific requirement, it just counts towards the 124 you need for graduation.

Ok thanks hkem, so although the credit isn’t distributed to a specifc credit requirement in N&M, I will still save roughly $2,000 by using the AP score and getting 3 credits out of the way right? To clarify, it is more beneficial to receive a 4 or 5 so then the credit is distributed to a specific breadth inquiry? Thanks

Well, I wouldn’t necessarily say it will save you 2,000 dollars because if you are a full time student for 8 semesters, it wont matter. But yes it is more beneficial to have a credit distributed to a specific breadth of inquiry.
