My son is an incoming freshman. He has registered for the the following classes for the fall.
BUS A-100
BUS C-104
BUS K-201
BUS T-134
CMCL C-122
SPH H-180

He is coming in with AP credit for Macro and taking both Micro and ENG W-131at a local college this summer. He is planning on taking G-202 in the spring since he will have Micro done. He will have to take one more class to meet the requirements to get into Kelly. He has not taken a math class since his junior year and that was just pre-calculus. He is very nervous about taking a math before getting into Kelly and was hoping to take that requirement next summer.
My question is would he be better off taking the next level accounting class or try to struggle through M-118 or M-119?

Also he was hoping to major in marketing with a minor in communications.

That looks like a great schedule to have for his first semester. I was in the same situation my freshman year (just finished) and was able to be accepted into the business school. By the looks of the schedule I would go ahead and take MATH-M 118 instead of MATH-M 119. I was not very good at math but managed to get a B in MATH-M 118. Just some advice to pass along to your son:

-Keep up on the readings and do practice problems every day for BUS-A 100 so that all the information becomes second nature. Accounting is very step-based orientated and if you can commit all the basic information to heart you should be fine. My advise is do the reading assigned for homework of the class before class (Do reading #2 the day before you have class #2) that way you are at least a tad bit familiar with the information and then re-read it again for homework and do the practice problems.

-Make sure to do the pre-labs and reviews for BUS-K 201. Do the pre-lab the night/day before class and then the review right after class. That is what I did and got a B+ in the class (should’ve been an A- or A but I got to lackadaisical and slacked off after the midterm). Also do not do all the graded projects at once, split it up a little bit throughout the week and if you ever run into a problem ask your teacher for help and GO TO OFFICE HOURS (I highly recommend Jim Anderson’s office hours. Great teacher and an even nicer guy). Also do not joke around in the online lecture, just answer the questions because in the end those points accumulate for bonus.

-Be well prepared for your speeches and GO TO OFFICE HOURS before your speech! I received an A primarily because my teacher saw that I tried hard and I put in the time and effort.

Other than that I wish your son the best of luck. Out of curiosity are you an in-state family and if so are you relatively close to an IU campus to take classes in the summer. I would love to help you with advise for a future schedule if you would like.

It looks like you have done a lot of excellent preparation to applying regular admit by already taking W131 and the two econs. I am not a fan of taking A201 over one of the math classes, mostly because grading for that class is done on a curve, and in the second semester 65-70% of the people who take A201 will already be in Kelley and already be in their second year at IUB. A201 takes a lot of discipline, and the ones already in Kelley probably are pretty disciplined. Contrast that with the students who take M118 and M119; they will overwhelmingly be freshman, many of which won’t even return to IUB sophomore year. The trend of having people who take M119 that are not suited for the class has been made worse by making it a possible gen ed course. The M119 class gpa is really damaged, however, by the fact that advisers herd over 700 freshmen a year into M211 based on a 25 question orientation math test; the majority of these students should be in M119, which would raise the M119 class gpa significantly if they had taken M119. In other words, I don’t think M119 is that horrible. My son had no AP credit and only pre-calculus in HS and took M118 (already a direct admit) freshman year had got his only “W” in it at IU. He took M119 and got an easy A the next semester, and commented how there was just very little competition in the class.

Also, be sure to check the new Kelley Bulletin when it comes out. Theoretically, they could eliminate the A100/G202 together option for standard admits applying to start at Kelley in Fall 2015.

This is what I would do if I were your son.

Freshman (Spring)
BUS-G 202
BUS-T 175
MATH-M 118
CMCL-C 190
FOLK-F 111 (easy class that covers both a A&H and WC GenEd credit)
GEOL-G 104 (easy class that covers the N&M credit; nicknamed “rocks for jocks” because its an easy class all the athletes take)

Thank you bthomp and gomudboner for your suggestions. He is living in the KLLC. There is a special M-119 class offered to students living there. It is a smaller class size. Do you think it is better to take this over the others assuming he can get into the class?
bthomp- Did your son do any prep work before the M-119 class? Wondering if my son should get the book before winter break and see a tutor at home a few times to get ahead.

I would agree with HKEM on this one. DS2 took M119 through ACP and M118 through CC. He took A201 at IUB and got A-. Math could be unpredictable specially if you do not know the grading records for the instructor. Most can do well on A201 if working hard. If you really want a bullet proof strategy, your son can take M118 and M119 on-line through CC during 1st two semesters or during summer with A201 if there is an IU branch campus nearby.

Unfortunately they have changed the admission rules for Kelly. You need to take 2 classes on the IUB campus from the section that includes M119, M118, A100 and G202, A201, Micro, or Macro. Since he already has credit for both Econs from AP and a summer college class, he will have to take one of the maths or A201. I spoke with Kelly admissions during orientation and they said that the requirements probably will not change this year. We will see if this holds true.

Ace, the OP’s needs at least one of M118/M119/A201 at IUB as he is not a direct admit.

I still think competition in A201 too tough to count on it as an admissions class. 65-70% of students in A201 will already be in Kelley. There will be lots of Hutton Honors and Kelley honors in the A201 sections, working hard to protect their gpas. Only about 125 students a year can take honors A201 (A205) at IUB, so many of the rest of the Hutton (about 400 per class) and Kelley honors (about 150 per class; some students in both) will take A201. Also, there are probably at least 550 declared or planned accounting majors at Kelley in each freshman and sophomore class. The majority will be taking A201 at Kelley and trying very hard to get not just an B but an A for their accounting major gpa. And the planned accounting majors that have not been admitted yet will be highly motivated to get accepted.

You are correct. There are no loopholes here. A201 has average CLS GPA near 2.9 while M118 has average CLS GPA around 2.3. Avoid M118 instructors whose CLS GPA was lower than 2.3. If he can get A- or better in A100, I would go with A201.
