Laptock Locks

Was wondering if you guys had any recommendations

I've got the Lojack for laptop software ready to go on my notebook already, but also want a lock as a supplement.

Any input is appreciated, also if you have any stories of stolen laptops or advice, that'd be great.

You should get an expensive lock. Get a combo lock with 4 numbers. I have a targus one, it is great. Last year at ckc, ppl had their laptops stolen from the 3rd floor, so be careful and get a good lock.

I've heard of two people that had their laptops stolen. One had his apartment broken into. The other had their laptop sitting near an open window, which someone climbed through.

I think the pretty standard laptop locks are the Kensington locks (like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000K4KH/103-8303203-2298250?v=glance&n=172282).

My work (internship) provides me one like that. IBM has a lock interface built-in. You may have to check if your laptop has such a slot. Honestly, I question the strength of these locks. They will certainly prevent someone from just walking up and taking your laptop, but if you lock your doors and windows, that shouldn't happen (this can be roommate-dependent, though). Any real thief could easily snip the lock with bolt-cutters or a similar tool. I personally don't have one (except the work-provided one) and never really saw them as valuable. You can judge for yourself, though.

Its hard to snip the lock. My roomates lock was broken, so we tried to take it off. No luck. We had to have someone from maintenance come in to just cut through the wire. It took him a while too. The lock part stayed on the laptop and had to be removed by a locksmith.

how about the 3-number locks?

id avoid kennsington products, theres a video floating around online of a guy picking one with a pen, paper, and scotch tape

DO NOT get that lock on that link. Thats the one my roomate had. He locked his laptop and couldnt unlock it the entire first semester. He would put the write combo in and it wouldnt work.

haha okay looks like i'll be getting a different one. thanks for the heads up.

Is a lock really necessary?

A lock will prevent casual theft. If you are careful about locking your room, that shouldn't be a problem anyway. A lock will not prevent any serious attempt at theft. I have never used one and none of my friends do and we haven't had our laptops stolen, so I personally feel they are unnecessary.

Yeah, I am contemplating whether I should get a lock. They usually cost about $20, and not even effective against a serious attempt.

Just hope my roommate isn't a d**k (for those who are scared of censored words).
