Are any of you guys getting one?

I don't know if I should...

I am not since I am not planning on taking my laptop out of my dorm except while at the library for finals and test

Jason2009- I’ve never heard anyone so confident about the safety of their laptop.

Well, there is your roommate to worry about. I’m buying one, there’s no harm in doing so

I ordered one yesterday. (: Safety first!

Jenuwin01- did you order a Kensington one?

[Slashdot | Kensington Laptop Locks Not So Secure](<a href=“Kensington Laptop Locks Not So Secure - Slashdot”>Kensington Laptop Locks Not So Secure - Slashdot)
Give this a one minute read.

Post was from 2004. Technology has changed. Yes, Kensington.

Some cables could be cut with a very good cable cutter. A lock can prevent SOME thieves… not others. It’s there so that people aren’t tempted to steal a laptop that is out in the open. Not everyone has the tools necessary to steal.

I mean I bought one so that I can go use the restroom or get a book at the library without lugging my laptop around. I’d try to find a friend to watch my laptop, in addition to my lock, but yeah… =)

Take this lock for example: http://images.acco.com/KENSINGTON/K64068F/K64068F-14530.jpg

A few years ago, people could just make a round object and break it loose. Now, if people try to do that, the lock will notice someone is trying to unlock with a fake key and lock it down completely. You can’t even open it with YOUR key. A locksmith has to be called. :0

Aren’t you supposed to lock your room anyways?

Yes, but during the afternoon, or any sort of daytime, people tend to leave their dorm rooms open so they can walk around and whatnot. There’s also the possibility that your dorm mate is the thief

I ordered a cheap combo one from ebay,

jenuwin01- What kind of lock did you buy. A link is preferred.

“Yes, but during the afternoon, or any sort of daytime, people tend to leave their dorm rooms open so they can walk around and whatnot. There’s also the possibility that your dorm mate is the thief”

That will definitely suck.

My roommate is a good friend of mine and if he does I ll make his fat ass run hahaha

I’m rooming with my friend from high school so I don’t have to worry.

If you are getting one, I wouldnt get anything else but Kensingtons. However common sense is the best safety measure lol

So Kensingtons are good one?

I’ll def be needing one, since I have a Macbook.

I’m rooming with a friend from high school too. I’m not worried about her… just about others. As others have said, doors are left open most of the time… so yeah. Just safety precautions. $15-$50 will save you hundreds or thousands of dollars (depending on the cost of your laptop).

Although if you catch them the compensation would go waaaaaay higher

such as,

loss of laptop = 700 dollars
loss of valuable data on laptop = 500 dollars
emotional damage = 1000 dollars
academic loss caused by loss of laptop = 1000 dollars

total compensation = 3200 dollars and a really f***ed up thief

not to mention lots and lots of evil satisfaction

I’ve talked to couple people who are already in college and gave me some tips.

Talk with your roommate to always keep the dorm door locked.
Keep your laptop out of sight ie: keep it in a backpack and hide it when its not being used. IF they don’t see it then they wont take it.
And finally
Always back up your data. You never know…

Also you might want to look into insurance.
The ADP policy at [Laptop, Desktop, Tablet PC and PDA/Smartphone insurance from Safeware Insurance Agency, Inc.](Insurance & Warranty for Technology, Fitness, Furniture & Appliances) is underwritten by an AM Best “A” rated insurance company, covers accidental damage AND theft, and can be purchased annually.

I remember when we went to orientation, as long as you closed the door (in Pentland), it was locked.

Anyone else remember it being like that?
