So my McTyeire International House Dinner and Interview is this evening, is there anyone hanging around the Vandy forum that can give me any words of advice? I’m applying for the French hall, and I feel pretty good about my skills (4 years of classes, 2 of which were extensively speaking- and listening-based), but getting to the last minute like this always has a way of making me nervous.
If anyone can give a few words about what to expect or any last-minute preparations I can make, that’d be great, thanks!
I don’t have experience with this interview, but my understanding is that they are much more concerned with your excitement to join a multicultural living experience and participate in communal activities than they are with your language skills.
Do post an update after your interview so future students will know what to expect!
Thanks to both of you! I’ve talked to some former McTyeire students, and generally they described it as pretty laid-back, so we’ll see. I mean, worst case scenario I can try again for Spring Semester applications, right?
Well, I just had my interview for the international interest hall and it was pretty laid back…we had dinner with the students before the interview and it was interesting to experience different cultures and perspectives …as for the interview questions, they were pretty much what they asked us on the written application (why are you applying, how you will contribute etc)
Nothing like heavy discussions on world events(they weren’t testing our general knowledge on international events!)…just a personal, informal interview…the kids at McTyeire seem very close-knit and passionate about different cultures…there was a real sense of community, especially because there are just 90 students in McTyeire’s community…I really liked the physical aspects of the building too…the location is perfect
There were MANY applicants (more to be interviewed next week) and the application seems very competitive…fingers crossed!
Now I can’t help but wonder if we met @Sophie1295, because I met several girls who interviewed tonight for the International Interest Hall! My interview was pretty laid back too, 5 interviewers and me and one other girl being interviewed at same time. I dunno if I’ll get accepted, I wasn’t sure if I came off as (or if I was even sure that I was) a good fit for the hall. That said, there’s something extra nerve wrecking about interviewing in my second language, as I feel it’s harder to be “me” when I’m not confident about what I’m even saying.
Just accepted my spot in the French Hall for McTyeire! Good luck if anyone else is still waiting for responses or if you’re going through the regular housing lottery!
Congratulations SusieAnne! I was so glad to read a while ago that you had decided to stay at Vanderbilt. That 1st year, first semester was a tough adjustment period for my son too and he is now happily planning his third year at Vanderbilt. Best of luck next year!
Thanks so much @Momthreeboys I’m definitely glad I decided to stay! There’s a certain learning curve to Vanderbilt, I think, and once I decided that I just was and wasn’t going to do certain things (cough Chemistry and Biology cough) my time there got much easier.
