Hello, I'm DK, and I was a transfer from El Camino college (CCC) to UCSD.

Since there is a lot of talk about UCSD and the anxiety from all the applications and such, please do not hesitate to ask me anything (transfer process ; school life ; midterms -which I survived with A's).

Quick things

Communication major with a minor in Law and Society

Got into UCSD off of waitlist ; UC Davis TAG ; UCLA and Cal I was rejected ; Got into CSULB and Poly Pomona

Sorry DK. No one cares about UCSD transfers. They only want to hear from Berkeley or UCLA students. I know from AMA experience. (Disclaimer: Only partial sarcasm)

I’m sorry this thread failed miserably, but I want to let you know that I’m here for you buddy. If you want, we can meet up at Porter’s Pub and drown the burden of being insignificant UCSD transfers together. My heart goes out to you fellow Triton.

@dilapidatedmind : LOL I know right? :[ No love for UCSD. We can drown our sorrows of being in this school (?) with a nice draft pitcher of Blue Moon. </3

Hey, I actually have a different suggestion. I am currently a UCSD freshman, but the expenses are too much for me to handle. I wanted to transfer out of UCSD (withdrawl) and then go to community college and maybe transfer back or somewhere else where it is a little bit cheaper? I have been thinking about this alot!

The only reason I didn’t originally go to CC is because I was afriad that if I went the transfer process would screw me over and I would not get into UCSD the second time, which is the only college I want to go to so I can stay in San Diego.

What do you think of my idea? foolish or logical? Well I guess it doesn’t really matter because it is what I want to do. I guess my real question is if you can tell me how community college was like since I plan on going? and also what do you think of my idea?

Go to community to save money but do not expect that you will get out in two years. Academic wise, that depends on your ability. It’s probably easier than where you are at right now.

I would sell my soul to satan to be a triton. UCSD is and has been my dream school, I could care less about CAL and LA.

I’m currently getting ready for class so I can’t flood you with questions as of right now, but for starters: Did you transfer in 2 years? What was your school ranking? What was your process on picking? (My current ranking is: Marshall → Muir → Sixth → Warren → ERC → Revelle)

@Copper : It is not a bad idea, however note that it will be harder (much harder) for someone who have attended a UC to transfer back to a UC. If money is a big issue, it probably is the best way to go (Perhaps you might get into a higher tier UC or with more scholarships!) If it helps, I got accepted for UCR from my freshman year, and I maybe got 3-4k in financial aid. Now I get nearly 20k in financial aid.

How I see it ; Money > Prestige > Knowledge. What is the point of spending 20-30k a year on a bachelor’s degree?

@Goodkidmaadcity : Woo, tritons. I transferred in three years, because I changed my major from Computer Science -> Japanese -> Communication, also I was only a part time student for my first year. My ranking was dependent on the requirements to graduate and the location as well. My list was Muir -> Marshall -> Warren -> Revelle -> ERC -> Sixth.

Do you live in the Village? I want to live there for the social experience, but I’m not entirely sure if its worth it. How many units did you have upon transferring? And how much work did you put into your personal statement? Because from what I’ve heard/read, it isn’t as important as it is for incoming freshmen, but it could also be the tipping point to whether or not you get in.

Hey, you said you are a communications major right? I’m also interested in it, but from UCSD’s website it says,
“The communication major is not designed as a training program in advertising, journalism, production, or public relations. It provides students with a solid liberal arts background necessary for graduate studies in communication and other disciplines, and for professional work in a number of communication-related fields, including primary and secondary education.”

Could you tell me about the classes you are taking, because I think I want go into PR or advertising (not sure yet), but UCSD specifically says their major isn’t catered to what I think I want. What are you thinking of doing with this major?

@TransferDK
I have to say I think my plan was pretty successful. I thought bumping this thread and playing up the whole self-deprecating UCSD student angle might lead to a few “pity” replies lol.
I actually have a question for you DK, you said GEs and “location” were factors in ranking the colleges? Why location since the transfer dorms are at the Village and your major / GE classes can be in any of the colleges?

@CopperNyugen
Are you an international student or out of state student? I’m trying to think why your expenses would be so crippling because you should qualify for some form of Cal Grant / Pell Grant as a US / California resident. Have you also considered applying for scholarships? If you have decent grades you should be able to qualify for several scholarships which would reduce your financial burden. As a continuing student, I actually have no loans this year because and my total cost of attendance is covered between scholarships and my Cal Grant.

I don’t think going back to community college is a terrible idea, but there are some risks involved. Community colleges unlike at UCSD have a lot less resources and funding, so classes can be very hard to enroll in. If you think it’s challenging getting some of the classes you want on WebReg at UCSD, you’re in for a surprise when you enroll in CC. It can often take students an extra year just to get in the classes they need because course catalogs are so limited on sections and the CC’s are so over-enrolled. Additionally, as a student that’s already attended a UC, you’re going to be subject to a unit limit as a transfer for most of the UC’s. Most of the UC’s, UCSD included, don’t accept senior level transfers. So you’re limited to a certain amount of units you can take in CC before you become ineligible for admission at UCSD and many of the other UC’s. If you some how surpass that limit, which I think is 90 semesters units (CC + UC units), you won’t be able to transfer back to UCSD.

Lastly, also know that transferring back to a UC isn’t a guarantee. You’re still going to have to do well in your community college courses (which can sometimes be as tough as lower division UC classes) and your UC GPA will be factored into your transfer GPA. That means if you haven’t done well initially at UCSD, you’re going to have to have an even higher GPA in community college to compensate. I’d shoot for a 3.5+ combined GPA to get back into UCSD depending on the major. Ultimately, I think if you do well in your classes in CC and you stay on top of the transfer process, which can get a bit confusing, you’ll be fine. I’d suggest that you constantly keep in contact with UC advisors and transfer reps through your time in CC because their can be a lot of complications for former four year transfers. Also, be wary of CC advisors/counselors a lot of them have no idea what they’re talking about lol.

Aaah I love you OP thanks for coming here! who said no one gives attention to UCSD?! I can’t wait to transfer there and get out of this crazy LA city!lol
ok, so…my major is Computer Science, I’m transferring from SMC, I have done all recommended courses except two: data structure and discreet math
no ECs, but I work part-time and have a pretty good Personal Statement…
GPA: 3.5 by end of Fall
Do you have any idea about my chance of getting into UCSD?!
another thing, if I get in, when should I apply for dorms and financial aid?!
also, do UCSD offer Speech?! if yes, what part of general education it’s considered?! art and humanities or etc etc…
I’ll cry if I don’t get in LOL, and I dislike every other UC school(well, except Cal, but that’s not really doable), so my next school will probably be CS San Jose or CS SLO!

@goodkidmaadcity : No, I live off campus. I used around 105 units while transferring. I put around 3-4 hours on each writing (including the revisions and writing). I dont think its a make or break kind of thing, but if it makes a difference, i believe it has tipped the scale for me (I was a waitlist acceptance)

@ItsSoSunny: I honestly took Comm because it was something I had a lot of credits on, and I was good at (Speech and debater). However, for PR, there is a separate section called Visual arts (UCSD is top at this) and there are sections for mass media classes that I am planning to take.

@Snorlaz : Got into Muir. It was so cash $$$$$$$

@dilapidatedmind : LOL Good job You successfully revived a thread (Like I am doing now). For me location wise, I wanted to first go to village, but due to my sporatic sleeping schedule, I would not want a roommate. Also I am poor as dirt. :[ No money for the village. GE’s wise, I know most colleges require just a few things for IGETC certified, but I like trees (legitimately LOL) ; and I knew that I had already finished my ethics class, which left me with just the writing class (MWCP 50/125). Just one class for my college requirement, pretty sweet.

@bolandgoo : I would say around 60-70% of getting in. I would say that if the recommended classes arent required ones, you have a good chance of getting in. Apply for FAFSA at around January. UCSD does not offer speech, they do offer communication, but be warned ; it is just literally theories, and barely any performance. If you do get in, hit me up, we can go out for lunch, on me :)
