LC Scholars

Has anyone received notice of Loomis Chaffee Scholar award?

My son’s acceptance today did include mention that he is an LC Scholar. We were surprised because we didn’t even know about the program and are still not quite sure what it means. We read the info about it online and thought maybe it means they think he may need extra support?? It mentioned meetings with other scholars and a faculty member, etc. Summer program I assume to prepare for school? But honestly we have no idea.

I was going to ask on CC to see if anyone here is also an LC Scholar and what the benefits are? It seems like in addition to FA he will get help with book fees and a laptop and money towards a SYA - all of which sounds very cool. I just wasn’t sure of the difference between an LC Scholar and a regular FA student so if anyone has experience with the program I’d love to hear. I did a search on CC but didn’t come up with anything - maybe info will be in his letter when we get it next week.

Last year, our son was admitted to Loomis Chaffee and was awarded LC Scholar. We did not request finanacial aid - his LC Scholar was in effect a merit scholarship. If a student is receiving financial aid, the LC Scholar award may be part of the total aid package. (Full disclosure - our son loved LC, but decided to attend Thacher.)

Loomis offers LC Scholar status to the very top tier of their applicants - the students that they want very much to attend their school. It is a huge honor - congrats to your son!

LC Scholars are expected to be leaders in campus life - the summer session is to give them the opportunity to get to bond with each other, to meet faculty and top administration, and to get them off to a very strong start to their Loomis career.

When you receive the admissions package from Loomis, there will be quite a bit of information about the LC Scholars Program, which should answer all your questions.

I believe PelicanDad’s son is also a Loomis Scholar - but not sure about that, and I haven’t seem him on CC in quite a while.

I don’t think my son was awarded LC Scholarship, as there was no mention of it in his acceptance letter. Congratulations to your son! I only found out about it because I was trolling through the admissions site one day and clicked on the link!

I was rejected by Loomis and just wanted to know what you guys did to give you the extra edge and post your stats

Thanks for the info mountainhiker! We’ll wait for the acceptance package in the mail to learn more about it.

Math557 - Not to be vague but I honestly don’t think you can compare applicants based on stats alone. So much more goes into admissions decisions than stats - gender, racial, ethnic diversity, geographic location, maybe they want kids from a school they’ve never gotten kids from before, maybe they need a tuba player and you play clarinet, etc., etc. Besides I don’t know my son’s stats - I can tell you he did well on his SSATs, comes from a school that doesn’t give grades, plays an instrument in our school’s jazz band, is athletic but wasn’t “recruited”, has no ECs, has done no community service outside of school and still he got in to all 4 schools he applied to with FA from all. See? I think it’s hard to say what tipped him over the edge looking at just his “stats.”

Yes, my DC is a LC Scholar. It had been a great program. I don’t think it’s in any sense remedial! The summer program, at Wellesley College, gives your kid a chance to explore academic or non-academic interests with other kids who will be matriculating at Loomis, but within a much larger summer residential program (EXPLO) of 400? 600? Kids on a college campus. It’s supposed to help ease the transition to boarding, I suppose. Our kid loved it; took courses in economics and international policy, both of which remain strong interests at LC.

It has put DC on the map with Deans, faculty, and the Head. DC gets to attend special events with speakers both on and off campus. This summer DC will be heading overseas on a program of own choosing, and the school is footing the bill. As others have mentioned, we had no idea this was even a possibility throughout the application process; it wasn’t until the acceptance that we found out, and it has been quite a blessing.

Wow that’s an amazing experience. What kind of person is your DC. What are their stats.

Tauromom why do you think your son was accepted as an LCD scholar besides stats.

LC is a great school, with a super great ADCOMM. A really healthy environment with terrific college matriculation. You all should be extremely proud of yourselves.
