LEAD Summer Business Institute

I think we should start posting in the LEAD thread: one, it keeps it active; two, it will make it easier to aggregate all the questions and answers about LEAD, especially for this next group of applicants.

As moderator of this forum, I heartily agree with that suggestion.

Good luck to this year's applicants to LEAD. Good luck to the LEAD alumni applying to college this year.

Keep this thread alive! :)

Sorry for being so blunt, but their website is crap. It is confusing and vague on the details.

Does anyone know when this year's LEAD program start and end?

Thanks in advance.

I believe it says it on the application.

what details are you looking for Firedrice?

Hey,

My son is applying to LEAD for the summer of '08.
He has all the grades and test scores,( I think, gpa 3.75 ACT 32).
But he is white, Jewish, upper midder class from New York. Can he get into this program?
I'm not sure, because after reading a few pages of this Thread it seem to me that this program is looking to help just certain groups of people.

I'm sure this question has been asked in previous pages but, to save time, can those who were accepted in previous years share some stats, particularly test scores? I'm applying for the summer of '08 and I would like to see what scores to shoot for.

I suggest first reading some of the earlier posts

some ppl had amazingly high GPAs and good test scores
others, had decent GPAs and high test scores
essays were probably all good to great
all these guys are amazing to me and showed that to the app readers in some kind of way

my stats at the time BTW
African American Male
1430/1600... 2090/2400
215 PSAT
3.3UW, 4.18W
1IB/AP Freshmen Year
1IB/AP Sophomore Year
4APs and 2IBs and 2Honors Junior Year
Essays: Bears conflict with Lovie Smith... Outward Bound leadership role
1) Stanford--DECISIONS COMING SOON!
2) Duke
3) Illinois--where I ended up... THOSE 3 WEEKS WERE AMAZING
4) Penn
5) Minnesota--no longer an SBI as far as I know... it got replaced by UGA

to roszellen... it won't hurt to apply
that would be my view on it
it is geared toward peoples underrepresented in the business world (as leaders, specifically)

sorry, those 5 schools were the schools I listed as my top 5 choices

I'm filling out the application, and on the section where it asks to tell them what else to consider when reading my application, what have previous LEADers put? Do I mention I'm a first generation minority? What is appropriate to mention?

Also, what test scores do you have to submit? Will it be all right if I only submit PSAT and PLAN scores, since I won't be taking the SAT and ACT until after the application is due?

ah, it really depends.

I got in LEAD with like...a 3.3 GPA (2.9 unweighted)

My PSAT was a 189.

But my essays were beyond worldy ;) That's what
happens when you're an editor/analyst for several
websites and grade CC members essays for the past
few years ahhaha. I'd be more than happy to show
anyone the material that I used to get in, to get a
feel for what they're looking for on the essay (because
i'm BEYOND sure that my essay got me in from the
looks of my state. Oh, and of course the ECs + 600
community service hours behind the essay :P ).

PM me or email at apexeffect@gmail.com

Good luck everyone!

FYI
I think the website is being revamped
the app is still accesible
look in the uppder right hand corner
well, here's the link: http://leadnational.org/2008_App.pdf

apps are due feb 1st.. im taking the SAT on Jan 26th.. how will i send them my scores? =s

never mind.. just found out that this program is only for "us citizens"

bump so we won't lose it

update
check out [url=http://www.leadprogram.org]LE

So... anyone applying this year? And what is the normal daily/course agenda for LEAD?

I have another question. Are there any past LEADers who have gotten accepted with a score of less than 180 on the PSAT?

Thanks!

When I looked in the facebook groups for LEAD, over 90% of the participants was a URM. I emailed them and they said that the program is open for everyone. But doesn't the demographics of the accepted participants show that this program is geared more towards URMs? Hope I didn't sound racist, but can anyone confirm this?

it is geared towards groups not well-represented in business
URMs and women, definitely
WASPs? not so much
but I say apply and let LEAD decide

BTW the applicant pool is quite strong, and it is getting more competitive each year... meaning make sure you work on those essays
