bring up my post

Is anyone applying for the 08 Northwestern Lead????

Illinois is where it's at djperez91
the Northwesterners wanna be us
jk (no seriously)
Illinois and Northwerestern met up
Penn and Georgetown met up
IDK who else met up, but it was an interesting experience

apply
and ask any questions you may have
spread the word as well

The more I read this thread, the more I want to apply!
How is the acceptance rate for LEAD? And, does anyone know the dates for the programs?

P.S. ActurialDJ, you have been very helpful on this thread! :)

thanks, keep asking questions

The site states that there are about 1200 or so applicants vying for just 370 seats
I have a feeling that means 40 people are waitlisted
since there are only 11 SBIs and 30 spots at each
(as far as I know)

so you could say the acceptance rate is around 27%-31%
don't let that deter you tho--view it is a good thing since you know LEAD is obviously trying to get the best of the best together to make the experience that much better

concern yourself with making your app the best it can be, and you'll be fine

It's not as hard to get into as TASP and NO WHERE NEAR as difficult as RSI. For the quality of the program, it's high acceptance rate is surprising, which is why I encourage you to apply. I'm already helping like 8 kids, I have time for more! :)

I have another question. Are there any past LEADers who have gotten accepted with a score of less than 180 on the PSAT?
Definitely. The "requirements" for lead are 100 on the PSAT or 1000 on the SAT, of course this is the old sat(CR & M)

I got in with pretty crappy PSAT scores.

M- 68
CR- 43
W- 45

Of course, I hate reading those passages so I decided to go to sleep during the CR sections. Anyways, that is 156. I'm sure some people got in with lower scores than I. I didn't even know about the program. I got an email in February telling me that they were giving me an extension on the application deadline, so I decided to apply. I'll give you the rest of my stats.

GPA- 3.9 UW
SAT-2010
CR- 650
M-700
W-660(I did try a bit harder on the real SAT)
Class Rank- 24/497
Athletics: Varsity Golf and Indoor/Outdoor Track
2 Clubs(nothing you've ever heard of) with leadership positions

I think what got me in LEAD, were my good recommendations. I picked people who I knew were articulate and thought highly of me.
Also, my two essays were pretty decent.

Oh yea, and I take mostly AP classes with a few honors classes. Don't be scared of test scores, I really don't think they make much of a difference with lead.

WASPs? not so much
Good Phrasing :)

Hey STL
what SBI?

Yeah I was just getting on here to give you two examples of people who had scores less than 180 on the PSAT, but I think STL stole my thunder... lol

Well, one of my good friends went to LEAD Wharton with a 170-something
and so did his roommate at LEAD

Test scores are only a part of the application
I know my friend is the current student body prez at his school, in IB, writes really unique and lucid essays, keeps a good GPA, and is a geniunely good person... this all probably helped his recommenders when they spoke to his qualitites since the proof was in the pudding (the stuff easily seen on paper) backing up their words

basically... APPLY! let LEAD decide
you probably have more good going for you than you realize

if anyone has any SBI-specific questions, I will see if I can get someone I know to e-mail you or even post on here if they have a CC account

Is being Asian detrimental to your chances of getting in? I was looking at the photos and it seems like they mostly are looking for underrepresented minorities

how do they award your selections for places????

do u always get your #1 choice???

ActuarialDJ:
is the illini sbi really better than the Northwester??

as far as im concerned, Illini undergrad business is better than Northwester'ns
but KELLOGG Graad school will ownnnn U of I

what do u guys think

Well, illinois undergrad business is better than northwestern becuase northwestern does not have an undergrad business program. they do have a certification program, but its not a major.

Basically, Wharton is the one that everyone wants to go to so its harder to get in. Not everyone gets their number 1 choice. I wanted Wharton, but got my 2nd choice Tuck. Geographic Location places a huge role. For the most part, they won't send you somewhere that you live near. For example, if you live near Durham, and you put Fuqua as your first choice you won't get into Fuqua, you'll get into one of your other choices.

I don't think that any of the SBI's are really that much better than others. Wharton is a 4 week program, the others are three weeks. That's the big difference. Also, location of the program can impact availability of companies which you can visit. For example, at Tuck there is really nothing around us, so we had to go all the way to Boston to visit a corporation. However, at places like Fuqua(Research Triangle Park) and Stanford(Silicon Valley) there are many companies available for site visits.

If Kellogg is where you want to go, then mark it first but think about where else you'd want to go. I'd have to suggest Tuck. Tuck would own all of the other SBI's.

yeah the thing is i dont think my parents can afford sending me out of state
for sbi
and since i live in illinois
northwestern ( where i want to go for college)
or
U of I would be best.
I was also interested in the Stanford or Wharton one
but i bet the plane ticket is expensive..
do u guys know how much lead helps you out with financial aid???

Hey everyone :)

I did LEAD Wharton '07..the best experience of my life no doubt. To clarify some of the things that have been said...Stanford is another 4 week program as well.

djperez91 don't worry about the financial aid situation..i mean yes it is an issue but you can apply for financial aid..what I did because I didn't receive financial aid is mail out letters to family, friends, small businesses, etc. tell them about LEAD and why you want to attend and many people will support you

I ended up raising enough money to pay for my trip, and airfare. My parents didn't have to pay a dime and the rest went into my bank account. So, yea if you have any questions I can definitely help you with that

To anyone else..feel free to pm me or w/e. The LEAD family is great, going to Wharton changed my life this summer..literally.

Can someone give me an idea on which type of colleges LEAD participants get into? Will LEAD significantly increase your chances at top schools?

For example, if you went to LEAD Wharton, will that increase you're chance at Wharton itself?

All from the LEAD 2008 Application brochure:
LEAD Class of 2006 (Graduated high school 2007)
24% of LEAD Students attending Ivy League Schools
39% of LEAD Students attending an SBI Schools (one of the LEAD schools)
37% attending other schools

also stats from that class:
209 of them are attending a Top 50 national university/Top 50 national liberal arts college in the U.S.
151 of them were offered merit- based college scholarship awards
69 of them are attending an Ivy League college
114 of them are attending one of the 11 universities which host a LEAD SBI
58 of them are attending the university which hosted their LEAD SBI

So basically..attending LEAD helps alot. lol

bebegrl: thanks for the advice, i would deff. want to talk to you
my aim is djperez369

i heard lead is amazing
does anyone know the dates????

btw is northwestern 3/4 weeks???

I think Stanford and Wharton are the only 4 weeks. All others are 3 weeks. Correct me if i'm wrong. I know tuck was three weeks. As far as the dates, I'm not sure for this summer. But I do know that they all have different dates. Most take place in july. Some start in june. Some end in august.

Northwestern is 3 weeks.. the earliest program that starts is UVA. Last year they started June 17, I belive. Wharton ran from July 5-Aug. 4.. What I did (if you are afraid of conflicts) was email LEAD and I asked them for the dates of the programs so that I could plan accordingly when ranking them.. and they emailed me back with all of the dates.

djperez..my SN is bebegrl976

Oh and about the acceptance into college thing, so far I've been accepted into two Top 50 universities (one of them being a LEAD school), so LEADers definitely don't have a problem getting into college.
