LEAD Summer Business Institute

Would you guys say that Lead gave you a better understanding of business.??
I have really important debate tournaments duing lead but idk if i should skip them for lead. what do u guys think?>

how would u rate lead on a scale of 1-100

BTW
does anyone know what northwesterns undergrauate Business are?
ive heard different things

Northwestern has an Undergraduate business certificate program from kellogg.

Kellogg School Certificate Program for Undergraduates - Kellogg School of Management - Northwestern University

There are only four classes that you take for the certification. You still major in something else. If you really really want to major in business then it is not the best option. But if you might major in econ or plan on majoring in something else then the certification is a good addition.

I would say that LEAD sort of gave me a better understanding of business. But that isn't really what I took most from it. I feel as though I improved my skills working in a group. I got better people skills. Learned how to network better. Which is very important for business.

As far as stock market and stuff, I really didn't learn that much. Tuck was very investment banking intensive and I learned a lot about the companies and recruiting but not really so much about the investment banking. I was basically talking with Goldman Sach's analysts everyday. At some points I got sick of it. It is still great and I would really recommend it.

I would say that I improved my public speaking, working in a group, networking, people skills, self-confidence, and work ethic.

I had accounting class, stock market, marketing and more and marketing was the only one I really liked. Accounting sucks.

I'm the person DJ talked about with the 170 psat score ( 177).

LEAD Wharton is the best program ever, and I've been to several.

Fin aid was def on point-paid for my whole tuition and my flight from Northern Calli to Penn.

Got to study with Wharton Professors, including academic superstars such as : Michael Useem and Mark Shorpshire.

Def. go if you like business. def go if you don't like business.

For me, I love politics and LEAD was not something I thought I could benefit from. I was wrong however because it exposed me not only to the business world but to college life, dorm living, and dealing with being in class with other highly intelligent people.
Furthermore, of course it teaches you business. Management, Marketing, Investment Banking and in between, no stone was left unturned.
For me class was boring but I am functional in several different business related areas- coming to LEAD with no backround in business, didn't even know what a stock was.

The Presentations were the best. What other kids get to present to BET, Goldman Sachs, Mcneil, General Mills, Lehman brothers, Young and Rubican, and Centocor.

Networking- you make so many connections.

You get to interview with your regional director!

In terms of college:
4 people from my LEAD were excepted ED at Wharton and like 4 more at CAS.

Proof of Lead's effects:

I hated business, finance, ect. it was boring-
After LEAD- applying to Wharton ( management concentration)

please apply.

Long winded but why do I think I got in-
Prayer lol
but other than that as DJ said my essays were great. My business issue one was about the war in Iraq- I used it to demonstrate how I want to bridge my political savvy with business know-how. My EC's were on point. and my rec's were good. Test scores are not and cannot be everything because they don't measure what's important in business- Public Speaking Skills, charisma, and Leadership.

any questions please pm or help with the process.

^Congrats! I have a low PSAT score too, I hope I get in...

How many people are there per school?

What is the racial breakdown? Is LEAD full of minorities? Are only a few Asians?

Oh and Mr. Tubbz forgot to mention that because of LEAD he got to meet me :) and his life was changed forever....really, I am the best thing that ever happened to him.

haha

So rough=bebegrl 976!

and there were a couple at Asians at some LEADs, but as the program is targeted towards minorities..requirements are prolly stiffer for them to get in.
Newho, as DJ said doesn't hurt to apply!
and check out LBW ( Leadership in the Business World at Penn) too

Oh and for those of you interested in technology Wharton also offers:

The Management & Technology Summer Institute (M&TSI) is a for-credit summer program for rising high school seniors who want to learn about the integration of technological concepts and management principles. Sponsored by The Jerome Fisher Program in Management and Technology, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, M&TSI features classes taught by leading faculty and successful entrepreneurs, field trips to companies and R&D facilities, intensive team projects, as well as other activities designed to give students the opportunity to learn about the principles and practice of technological innovation. This three-week for-credit program will take place from July 13 through August 2, 2008.

hey do u guys know the dates for the 2008 LEAD SBI's???

how would u guys rank the following SBI sites

Northwestern Kellogg
University Of illinois
Stanford University

and the so popular one....
Wharton

This might be a dumb question but do u guys think Lead is more important than Summer school trig that will get me into AP CALC AB senior year?

Thanks guys

I think LEAD is more important because its an oppurtunity that you will never have again. Even now I realize how important it was for me to experience being 3,000 miles away from home, living in dorms, ect. ect. The people you meet are utterly amazing. Futhermore- Like I consider myself a great public speaker but LEAD really really sharpened my skills.

You learn how to work in teams and creatively ....

It cannot be duplicated.

EVER.

And upon completion of LEAD, the alumni network is legit.

For specific SBI's-
All I know is Wharton is the longest and the best.
We went to New York and DC
studied with Wharton professors
went to alot of site visits and did lots of presentation.

Stanford is good. I've heard that apple gave them all ipods.

dj perez to get into wharton you have had to have taken calc in high school if it was offered so that is probably most important.

well.. taebubu I know for quite a few of us who did Wharton last year that we got in without taking calculus (Granted I am taking it this year) but when I applied I was only in pre- calculus

taebeu

i put northwestern kellogg as first choice
stanford as second
u of i as third
wharton as forth
and duke as 5th

hey! i did LEAD at georgetown - which isn't represented here at all so i felt obligated :) if anyone has any questions just ask because i cannot tell you how much LEAD changed my life.
xox

This is cool to see all of us from 2007 helping the next group coming up
In the words of Tracy Morgan: "REGULATORS! MOUNT UP!"
this is what happens when you watch too much Youtube

and back on topic...
LEAD is definitely the better choice
U of I is that place to be—course I am bias

LEAD is definitely a life changer
You will grow in some way during/after LEAD, whether expanding your goals, formulating new interests, meeting new types of people, working better in groups, etc... etc...

That is just the basics
Everyone has a unique experience but the one constant is that it was fun!

Even though I do not know every LEADer from last summer (at the other SBIs), I still feel a connection with all of them
I am a sports dude so I'll put it this way
The HOF of any sports is a select group of people and everyone voted into the HOF of their respective sport is a part of a family, rare company... an instant bond is created
LEAD is like the HOF in this sense—I feel honored to have gone through a similar experience with 329 other amazing individuals in 2007 and 7,000 or so alumni who are doing great things in this world.

oh yeah
I heard about LEAD from one of my good friends--it is definitely an alumni of action in terms of spreading the word... a sign of how much LEAD means to them--someone I call a mentor
she did LEAD@Duke (Fuqua) in '04
she is a Robertson scholar attedning UNC (her home school) and Duke
this is not surprising
from 2007, I definitely know ppl who have gotten into Stanford, Penn (some in Wharton), MIT, Yale, Illinois College of Business, Columbia, etc...

and to rep the Illini LEADers again
the Columbia acceptee was from our group at Illinois
you have to remember that correlation does not imply causation
meaning these kids were amazing before LEAD, but the experience and the name of LEAD carries so much weight in the application process, being able to write essays on just that one summer alone
I mean I want to help you guys out even more
that is how great LEAD was for me... keep asking questions!

Is there anyone here from LEAD@Stanford?

If there is can someone comment how are the Stanford LEADers doing on acceptance on Stanford? Does Stanford give a big boost to LEADers like Wharton does?

good question
from what ive heard it gives a big boost to any school
but
you shouldnt really consider lead as a college resume enhancer
but rather a new way to experiance business and meet new great people
but i havent even done it so ask someone else
lol
im hoping to be
northwestern LEAD class of 07

p.s.
out of the 19023485095 replies ive heard
lead is supposed to be amazing and life changing

this question goes out to stanford, wharton, cornell, and georgetown LEADers:

Right now these are my top choices. I would like to know about some of the trips to other cities that occured at the program. Were they overnight? Were they educational or just for fun? Did you get a chance to sight see? And any other traveling info. would be GREAT!
Thanks!
