Leadership Award - CAL Alumni

I was curious about this leadership award, since I know everyone gets the email about it. Anyone know how many people actually get it? Is it reallly difficult??

Don’t worry about it now–the deadline was today at 5:00 PM.

I didn’t get an email. I’m guessing it only went out to top applicants.

The Leadership Award email went out to all applicants with 3.3+ GPA and who have marked the “ok to share info with outside scholarships” box on the UC application.

For the freshman class, there are 250 recipients total.

^ Wow!! Only 250, I guess I have no chance then.

Why would it be only 250 then? I’m sure pretty much everyone who applies to Berkeley has a 3.3+ GPA, and most probably checked that scholarship box.

Because if you give it to more people, you have to find more money to give to those people.

The scholarship is only awarded to a selected pool of admitted students who have applied for the scholarship (ends up being a couple thousand students). So the selectivity ends up being just below 10%.

you have a chance - I got it this year and I thought I had no chance. Did the application in one day and got the interview super late. I think it is the interview that makes the cut. they wait to see which students actually enroll in berkeley, then issue out interviews, then it gets selective from there. just be yourself and humor helps - i’m pretty sure I talked about CC in my interview :P

Does anyone know if Spring admits ever get the leadership award? I am a semi-finalist so I am curious.

I have literally gotten the email for this like 7 times. Is that a sign? The email is the exact same, but has been sent to me 7 different times… :O

Does anyone know if both of the alumni scholarships are read by the same people? The achievement and the leadership applications are very similar so one could use the same essays. If the alumni are the same readers, maybe DS should write different essays.

Also, I was told that the alumni don’t have access to DS’s application but there is no place on the scholarship app that asks scores, grades, etc… Are those things not a factor in determining who wins the award?

Do we know the odds of winning either of these awards?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

PS. Philosopherking, DS got multiple notifications, too, so I wouldn’t guess that that is some kind of “sign” other than trying really hard to get people to apply. The due date for one of these was postponed so maybe they didn’t get enough applications?

@fidoprincess, applications are read by alumni volunteers (I used to volunteer). Usually people volunteer for one or the other, but some people volunteer for both. But the number of applications is so high that the likelihood of the same readers coming across both applications is very low. The only information used to determine the scholarship is whatever is on the scholarship application; the alumni readers don’t have access to the UC application (the scholarships are awarded based on leadership, TAAP has an additional consideration for income, so scores and grades don’t really come into play).
