Leadership Award Invite

My S just got this email from Cal inviting him to apply for the Leadership Award. Does everyone get this?

The Cal Alumni Association would like to invite you to apply for The Leadership Award, a one-year, merit-based scholarship for students who demonstrate innovative, initiative-driven leadership impacting their academic, work, or community environments.

I also got it in addition to the Award Achievement Program Award. Not sure if everyone gets these.

I came to ask the same question. Does anyone know?

What’s the Award Achievement Program Award? We didn’t get that one.

I got the Acheivement Program one first and then the Leadership one about an hour later

i got the leadership award invite as well. I called the office of admissions and they said it is based off of a preliminary view of your application.

Like I
-Started/Pres of Young Republicans Club
-Us Congressional Intern
-People to People Student Ambassador
-Intern for MD GOP
-Business Intern in China

So it is natural that I got this email. It doesn’t guarantee acceptance though.

The Achievement Program scholarship is for low income students only. Family income cannot exceed $86,000.

I also got the Achievement and Leadership Award Scholarship invite, which is surprising to me because Berkeley is a super high reach for me.

So, in conclusion, getting this email doesn’t mean anything in regards to one’s decision, right?

Getting the email itself doesn’t really mean much, but if you actually get the scholarship it can mean a ton.

What is the value ($ amount) of this award? Do they offer many?

They offer a lot judging by last year’s recipients. The monetary value is listed in the description of each scholarship. <a href=“Scholarships - Cal Alumni Association”>http://alumni.berkeley.edu/community/scholarships/2013-scholars

I got a Leadership Scholarship invite as well.
Hopefully it’s a good sign…?

@akpl4485 are you sure that the adcom said that it is based off a preliminary view of your application? Because the email suggests otherwise…

I got one too this morning.
Personally, I don’t think they send it out to a vast majority.
It’ll only add up to their review work - as the application adds another 3 essays, albeit short ones.
Lets hope it’s a good sign!

We got this too. From old threads it looks like not everyone gets it, but that you can get it and still not be admitted. ‘A preliminary review’ might be right. The alumn on the UCLA alumn scholorship said they got them from an initial read of applications but that after that there were other reads of each application by others. He/she said it was possible for someone to get their scholarship yet not be admitted, but that there was a cut before they even sent out the email. I don’t know if Berkeley’s is the same, though.

Anyone can apply for these, both here and at UCLA, but it seemed like not everyone was sent the email at least in the UCLA one.

I got it too, but I don’t think I can actually get money from it since I haven’t shown any leadership in my past four years in high school. My guess is that they send it everyone.

I wonder whether they go by the UC index. I have not seen the use of UC index anywhere else but on the UC admission site.
Based on the information on the website given by @ojshash, they had 10,000 eligible (could be invite plus applied) last year. So it is <20% of the of the total applicant pool. UCB has acceptance rate about the same.

@cptbtp

I was excited to receive the invite, as I displayed committed leadership throughout my application-- I thought it was a good sign that my application was viewed in a good light and at least noticed… but if everyone got it then…

if you read the bottom of the email it says “Your receipt of this scholarship invitation does not in any way reflect on your application for admission to UC Berkeley. You are no more or less likely to be admitted to UC Berkeley because you have received this invitation, and your decision to apply or not apply for Cal Alumni Association scholarships will not affect your application status.”
